Stolen Car Wreck Leads to Teen Arrest in Clare

A 16-year-old Clare boy was captured after a stolen 1952 Ford was wrecked near Stanton four hours after the theft from Gerald Callihan of Clare. Police say he pawned a wheel to buy gas and is jailed in Clare awaiting Probate Court hearing.

Clare Business and Professional Women Meet Plans Projects

The Clare Women’s club April meeting at the Hotel Doherty Fifth Avenue room included 14 members over a steak dinner. Mrs. Gerald Kempher led a brief business session discussing Red Cross Civil Defense and millpond restoration projects. Dr. Loren G Burt Alma will speak in May on Psychiatry And Hypnotism In Modern Medicine. Dinner hour moved to 6 30 followed by a bridge and five hundred card party with prizes for high and low scores.

Studying Plans For Fire Hall In Clare

A six member planning committee will meet Thursday at 7 p.m. to pick a site for Clare's new 25000 dollar fire hall. Mayor Seiter appointed Schroeder Haley to represent the city commission and Fire Chief Parish will name two fire department members. The Chamber of Commerce will choose two representatives. Bond authority was approved at the April 1 election.

Northernaires Crown Michigan Quartet Summit Title

The Northernaires won top honors as Finest in Michigan at a state contest in East Lansing. Members Wendell Cook Aubrey Snyder Frank Warner and Ralph Carpenter represented the Big Rapids district and beat a Detroit quartet to claim the statewide title. They advance to the national contest July 19 20 21 at Purdue University Lafayette Indiana.

Ken Barnes Cited For Outstanding Army Recruiting Service

Ken Barnes was named an Honorary Recruiter for the U S Army by special appointment from the Michigan Recruiting Service. The Garfield township election produced a 117 117 tie between Stanley Oman and Clinton R Case for Township Supervisor. Case seeks a court ruling to count several disputed ballots and overturn the tie while Oman was declared winner and to Harrison on the County Board of Supervisors after a recount.

Clare Little League Tryout Date Announced

Tryouts for Clare Little League players are set for Saturday April 18 at the Little League field in the former tourist park starting at ten o'clock weather permitting. Boys ages 3 to 12 may participate and parents must fill consent cards available at Green's Clothing Store or Clare Hardware. Booster stickers are sold by team managers with Basil Cole as chairman. A district meeting follows on Thursday evening April 18 in the Clare Public School multi purpose room with Little League officials to discuss the Minor League. a film will be shown and refreshments served.
