History was made in Clare as the last meeting of Clare County Selective Service Board No. 1 was held with the three members who composed the board during its entire tenure. Chairman Art Damoth Vice Chairman Ed Johnston and Secretary Wm. B. Dunlop served with integrity while clerks Donald Pelch Kyle McKinnon and Mary Nichols supported the office.

Frank Madison dies at daughter's home in Temple

Frank Madison aged 88 died at his daughter Mrs Emma Hilden’s Temple home at 4 14 pm Sunday after a long illness. Born March 21 1869 in Eaton county Michigan he later lived in Temple and Saginaw returning to Temple a year ago. Surviving are two sons Frank and Gordon one daughter Mrs Hilden two stepsons Teuben and Arthur Gallery twenty five grandchildren and twenty four great grandchildren. Funeral at Temple Nazarene Church at 2 30 Sunday Rev Roy J Hastman officiating burial in Pernwood Cemetery. Pallbearers were old friends. The body rested at Fosnaught Funeral Chapel in Marion until noon Sunday.

Monument Works Erected On McEwan Street In Clare

M Nuernberg of Detroit who ran a monument business with his father and later solo for ten years comes to Clare to open the Clare Memorial Shop. A 20 by 36 foot concrete brick building is under construction just north of the Michigan Consolidated Gas storage tanks on McEwan Street. Manufacturing will begin when ready. Nuernberg will carve, manufacture and sell gravestones and monuments locally. The last monument shop in Clare was Thos S Dorsey. Residents expect a strong opening for the new business as Clare has no current independent monument works. Nuernberg will move his wife Evelyn and daughter Lorraine to Clare. elder daughter June is married.

County Pioneer Thomas Bolen 83 Dies in Vernon City

Thomas Bolen born July 1, 1863 in Thomas town Ontario died March 23, 1947 at his Vernon City home after three weeks illness. Survived by widow Nettie Bowen two or three children and many grandchildren with funeral at Clare Baptist Church.

Clare Community Choral Society Debuts With Pleasing Triumph

More than 250 music lovers attended the Palm Sunday performance of the Bagster Cantata The Victorious King by the Clare Community Choral Society. Directors were Walter Broh and Doris Gerow. soloists included Helen Attaquin Doris Gerow Agnes Pierson Robert Krell and others. The two part cantata depicted the Easter story The Last Days and Crucifixion and The New Dawn and Resurrection. An offering was taken with prayers by Rev Rex Phillips. the ensemble comprises over sixty singers from Clare and nearby areas. Plans call for further concerts this year as weather and illnesses permit additional members to join.

Bert Chapman passes away at home in Grant township

Bert Chapman longtime Grant township resident died suddenly Sunday about midnight. He was born May 26, 1870 in Rol land Isabella County Michigan and lived in Clare county since 1913. He married Lena Densmore in 1895 and Emma Cohoon in 1939. seven sons, two stepsons, eighteen grandchildren and many relatives survive. Funeral services were held at Thurston Funeral home with Rev. Charles B. Hahn officiating and burial in Surrey Township Cemetery.

Two men sentenced in Clare justice court for drinking and vandalism

Clarenes Smith 32 of Mt Pleasant was arrested Friday on a drunk driving charge and jailed. He pled guilty before Justice Wilkinson in Clare Saturday, fined 350 and court costs, and placed on one year probation. Donald Winters and John Heim of Bay City were arrested Monday for destruction of property at Lone Pine Cabins. Winters exonerated Heinz, pleaded guilty to breaking a pane, paid 75 to cabin owner C A Cox, and was released after costs.

PTA Night Planned to Replenish Treasury
