Mid Michigan Community College president Eugene W. Gillaspy announces federal grants totaling 950000 for vocational and technical equipment. The State Department of Education provides 75000 and the Upper Great Lakes Regional Commission 20000. Local districts must match half the amount. Francis J. Mitchell coordinates the plan with area school administrators. For the first year only seniors will attend the Vocational Center for technical training while continuing academic work at their home high schools.
The annual tree planting program sponsored by the Clare Kiwanis Club and the City of Clare will start when weather allows. City Manager Glen Cain says trees removed last winter between curb and sidewalk will be replaced. Residents may call city hall and leave their names. plantings will follow the order of requests.
Boys wishing to play Little League must register next week at Clare High School on April 7 and 8 from 6 30 to 8 00 p m. Eligibility includes boys turning eight by July 31 or aged 16 by August 1. Registration closes April 8. bring one dollar for insurance. a parent must accompany each boy.
Churches across Clare present Easter week programs led by Rev. Hymie Rubenstein and local pastors. Activities include sunrise services at Clare United Methodist and St. Cecilia’s, Maundy Thursday Tenebrae, Good Friday services, and Easter cantatas with local choirs. Congregations invite all to attend and help with Easter arrangements.
Earl House of Rosebush was elevated to vice president of the Alma Production Credit Association during the annual meeting in Alma. He has served on the board since 1962 and on the executive committee. Franklin Switzer of Shepherd was named president. A year’s report was distributed to over 480 stockholders in central Michigan.
Cub Scouts of Clare Pack 3420 held the Pinewood Derby at St. Cecilia church basement on March 25. Grand Champion Greg LaBonte led the field, with Mike Meyers winning design, Norm LaBonte runner up in design, and individual den winners named for Dens 1 2 and 3 Webelos and special pins awarded. George Engel presented Scouter's Key to Mrs. Marvin Sartor for Den Mother service.
Clare area Dairy Day on Thursday April 3 draws farmers to IOOF Hall Wilcox Parkway for noon lunch hosted by Kraft Foods. Michigan State University specialists Donald Hillman and Dr. Cliff Beck lead demonstrations on dairy nutrition health and cheese use with Kraft's Bryan Miller and Harley Holt coordinating prizes. Virgil Bergstrom invites all local dairy men to attend.
Clare Recreation Board outlines expansion of the Summer Recreation Program with John Wolf directing again and two guards plus a Water Safety Instructor to manage waterfront activities. The plan includes junior and senior lifesaving, adult swimming classes, and non swimming rescue instruction for mothers and others.
Clare firemen responded to two grass fires on Tuesday before winds could worsen the situation. A first call reported a small blaze in Vernon City near the expressway entrance, quickly contained. A 10 30 a second fire near Colonville Road and Rogers Ave at the Ernest Town farm threatened fields and outbuildings until water was applied.
