Cincinnati’s delegation of 57 CIO members helped propel Ohio CIO Council’s first gathering since 1944 held in Akron. About 900 delegates and visitors attended. Akron facilities were taxed by the turnout. Jack Kroll was unanimously reelected council president after heading the Cincinnati group. Arthur Hartmann Earl Davis and Ray Sowder elected vice presidents. Sowder won a strong first ballot showing.
New York reports a Federated Press briefing that the recent stock market plunge is a prelude to a dustup that could dwarf the 1929 crash. Sources trace the decline to a July Federal Reserve Board study showing 10 percent of U S families hold 60 percent of savings while 30 percent have none.
The United Cemetery Workers at Spring Grove Cemetery won this week with renewed recognition of the union and an agreement to begin negotiations promptly for a new contract, said union president Talmadge Zipper.
Norwood Mayor Frank J. Ward is accused by United Electrical Workers officials of driving a scab pickup to the Allis-Chalmers plant. Three pickets on a 26 week strike, Bill Thompson George Dowling and Lowell Phillips, say Ward discharged his passenger at the entrance. The strike remains deadlocked on basic issues.
