A civic appeal warns of a battle over ballots on Oct 7. It urges citizens to register at the Board of Elections, 622 Sycamore street, and to volunteer with PAG for voter turnout. District leaders emphasize choosing progress and voting rights.
Akron hosts the first Ohio CIO Council gathering since 1944 with delegates from across the state. Cincinnati sends a delegation for the opening Friday as leaders assess policy directions for CIO PAC in upcoming elections. Mayflower Hotel hosts meetings with speakers James B Carey John Brophy Will Blake and W T Roberts.
Florence Wessel Weinman known as the one woman USO is back at work at the Times Star after management yields to Cincinnati Newspaper Guild demand. The guild says no discharge charges were justified after 22 years service and illness questioned. Guild leaders include Leo Hirt Virgil Brewsaugh Art Keller and William Blatz.
Members of Local 392, United Automobile Workers, vote on a proposed new contract to end the strike at Trailmobile Co. Willard E. Schmidt said terms would be disclosed after the vote. Issues include a wage increase, farming out clause, and time study clause. layoffs and speedup are feared if accepted.
The Republican majority in Council refused to place the Everett proposal on the ballot. Voters would decide if recreation should be a city responsibility under the council and city manager. Abstentions and absence affected the vote with Gradison noting potential controversy.
The Hamilton County Political Action Committee reorganizes to push voter registration and issue education for the November 7 election. A large Carthage Fair booth is planned for September and the PAC expands its Steering Committee to include leaders from CIO and United Auto Workers among others.
A protest by the Committee on Democratic Action led by Ernest J. Waits accused the Burger Brewing Co. expansion near Central Avenue of displacing 37 families. The group criticized the city Building Department for condemning homes while lax elsewhere, and urged a fuller housing report. The brewery says the site would improve workers’ conditions, not increase production.
