The sixth UTSE biennial convention opened June 15 in Chicago with Willard S. Townsend opposing civil disobedience plans urged by A. Philip Randolph. Townsend backs the Marshall Plan for national security while dismissing disobedience as a solution. Delegates and officials including Dean Pickens and Verna Bell addressed the gathering, with greetings from notable leaders and officials. Several officers were reelected by acclamation, and local 809 members from Cincinnati joined the event.

GM Smear Kills Labor Education
Washington report says Adam Stricker a GM economist, claimed to have attended Michigan classes and found Communist literature used in the classroom. He admitted only two classes, that the material originated from UAW CIO and was cited, and objected mainly to a cartoon of GM president C E Wilson. The tactic supposedly led Congress to kill the labor education extension bill in committee.
