UE District 7 to Elect Officers and Sponsor Summer Institutes

The UE District 7 Council will meet July 10–11 in Columbus to nominate officers and the Executive Board for the coming year. District 7 plans two one week summer institutes starting August 15 and August 22 at Camp Mantua near Cleveland with tuition of $15 per student and remaining expenses covered by the Council.

UE-765 Rejects Allis Wage Offer

Local 765 of United Electrical workers rejected Allis-Chalmers wage offer raising hourly pay by 9 to 12 cents. They demand a 324 percent rise reflecting lost purchasing power since 1935. Similar proposals to Pittsburgh and other locals were also rejected. upcoming meetings in New York planned with Payne and Heine or Reno.

Tax law cuts varied by income levels and cartel limits

The new tax law cuts $30 per $1,000 for a $3,000-a-year taxpayer but more than $166 per $1,000 for a $100,000-a-year earner. Separately, cartel actions reduced tin industry output to one third of capacity by 1933, driving prices from 27 cents to 46 cents per pound.

Westinghouse UE Strike Ends With 8 Percent Raise

Pittsburgh report says 70,000 Westinghouse Electric workers reached an 8 percent wage increase through United Electrical Radio and Machine Workers CIO. The deal raises hourly pay 9 to 16 cents, adds a paid holiday, and runs to April 1, 1950 with a 1949 wage review option. Similar pact secured recently with General Electric.

Union Teaches Formica Foremen New Contract

Local 757 union and Formica Co. held weekly conferences to explain contract details to foremen. The Shop and Negotiating Committees answered questions, with two more meetings planned this month. The aim is better interpretation to prevent grievances and arbitration. Delegate elections set for July 8. declinations must be in writing 10 days prior.
