Steel Vets to Meet at Gibson Hotel June 14

District 25 United Steelworkers asks local presidents to name active Veterans Committees to implement policies from the recent international convention. A meeting at 8 p.m. Monday June 14 at the Gibson Hotel will feature Meyer Bernstein discussing the nine point program for veterans, plus a Q and A period on effective implementation.

Rep Helen Gahagan Douglas clinched the Republican nomination and won the Democratic primary in California with landslide margins as unofficial returns from the June 1 primary showed.

Steel School Plans Are Set for June Institute

The annual summer institute for steel workers runs June 28 to July 2 at the University of Touton. Advanced courses avoid 1946 1947 material and first timers get a core program with optional subjects. Instruction will be informal with small classes and lots of discussion covering topics from collective bargaining to labor history and public speaking.

Union votes on 1948 officers at Legion Hall

Members of Local 1895 United Steelworkers will vote next week for their 1948 officers. The election is set for Thursday June 17 at the American Legion Hall on Madison road with polls open from 4 to 8 p m Dues cards must be signed before July 1 to comply with the Taft Hartley law. Rudolph Schneider and Brother Stelzer of Dept M 2 have returned to work after illness Raymond Daley was injured in a traffic accident and will be off for several weeks.

Powell Local Increases Wages by Five Cents

Local 1858 of United Steelworkers announces a 5 cent wage increase for Powell Valve Co. workers, effective June 7, as stated by local president Norbert Litchfield. Delegates for the Steelworkers summer institute to be held the last week of June will be chosen at the June 18 meeting. Local members also raised over $500 for the widow and children of Walter Brooks, a Plant 2 employee who died in an accident involving an electric crane.

Vacation Pay Policy Settled by Aluminum Union Committee

The vacation pay administration question was settled in a Friday meeting after the union committee and staff representatives Al Whitehouse and Bill Black, with the support of Aluminum Industries president Harry Hater, worked to reach an agreement.
