Papers Sang Same Tune Fifty Years Ago in Cincinnati
A vintage Cincinnati paper recalls a strike by the engineers and firemen union seeking 25 cents an hour and a ten hour day. The piece contrasts past editorials labeling radicals with today’s gains like paid holidays, pensions, and shorter hours, noting unions grew amid a subsidized press and politicians’ aid to plant owners. It also mentions Joe and Ethel Slusher buying property in Kentucky and a near congressional intervention over Woody Wilson’s window gas draft.
