Division heads and Cincinnati CWA leaders declare all 100000 Bell system workers will respect picket lines if arbitration of seven major CWA-CIO demands is not agreed by Feb 8. The message stems from January 31 meetings showing full union solidarity and calls for wage gains and improved benefits.
Otis Brubaker, research director for the Steelworkers CIO, testifies before the Joint Congressional Committee on the Economic Report that pension improvements can be funded without price hikes. He argues the claimed $4 a ton rise inflates costs, while material costs have fallen and profits could swell despite industry claims.
The Communications Workers of America faces a sustained dispute with the Bell System over wages and working conditions for about 320,000 telephone workers. It argues Bell’s pay is low, with 250,000 switchboard operators earning about $38 weekly, and cites layoffs, mechanization, and hostile labor relations as factors. The union urges public support to push for fair treatment and wage improvement, noting Bell’s vast profits and size while appealing to customers to back a just labor reform.
William Meadows, Local 1728 United Steelworkers, was nearly hit by a car driven by Anthony Fluegemann while leafleting at the Lunkenheimer Carthage plant entrance. Meadows clung to a fender lamp until coworkers halted the vehicle. Fluegemann was not arrested. The incident sparked a union grievance over Fluegemann’s demotion and job displacement procedures, signaling tension between the company and Local 1728.
