Talented Musicians Win Union Backed Scholarships
Miss Chica Morgante a 22 year old violinist from Lower Burrell Penn won an eight week summer scholarship to the AF of M 10th annual Congress of Strings in weekend auditions here Co sponsoring the scholarship are the Cincinnati Musicians Association Local No 1 and the Louisville Musicians Union Local No 11 There were six contestants including one violinist and five cellists An 18 year old cellist from Louisville was selected as the alternate winner Robert Bardston senior at Louisville Atherton High School will enter the University of Louisville with both an academic and music scholarship in the fall Judging the competition were CMA president Eugene V Frey John Beroset Roland Fansher and Andy Jacob Morgante is pupil of Connie Kiradjieff Bardston pupil of Grace Whitney The Cincinnati Musicians union has participated in each of the 10 years of the AF of M scholarship program All expenses including travel are paid by the sponsoring locals Classical string players ages 16 to 23 eligible to compete 120 young musicians chosen from the U S and Canada Two groups of 60 study and perform at Saratoga Springs and USC Los Angeles Barry Green will be on the USC faculty Other Cincinnati contestants included cellists Dann Young Finneytown senior George Butler Western Hills senior Susan Hadley Greenhills sophomore
