New Social Security Rules Expand Benefits for Dependents and Widows
New provisions signed by President Johnson broaden eligibility for dependents and widows including about 175,000 children and disabled spouses. Effective March 1968, a fully insured status can qualify a child for payments, and disabled widows or divorced wives may receive benefits starting at age 50. The changes aim to help families with long-term care and support, with about 60 million expected to be paid to roughly 65,000 people in the first year.
