A Washington despatch portrays U S diplomacy toward Cuba Colombia and other small republics as coaxing coddling and gentle pressure. Officials compare protests to Platts maneuvers while seeking better terms on canal and insular pacts.
Washington on October 28 learned that the State Department promptly answered Colombia’s note on the Panama Canal treaty. The reply likely addresses sovereignty over the isthmus and Colombians’ objections to actions by Commander McLean and Admiral Casey hindering troop movement across the railroad. Negotiations continue in Bogota with Minister Hart and Concha eager for a swift settlement.
In Kokomo Indiana Mrs Flo Stonebraker sought a divorce from Michael Stonebraker. As she prepared to testify their two children aged 9 and 7 knelt and prayed asking God to have their mother return and remove the dagger from their hearts. The trial halted and the suit was withdrawn. The wife is the husband’s stepsister.
The revolutionary General Uribe-Uribe surrendered at Rio Frio near Santa Marta to General Majarres with ten cannon 2500 rifles and 3000 rounds of ammunition after defeat at La Cienaga. General Majarres 2000 men surrounded the rebels and a telegram from Majarres and officials confirms heavy casualties and pacification progress in Magdale sia and Bolivar isthmus left under government control.
Despatch to the Colombian Legation in Washington confirms the surrender of General Uribe Uribe and declares the interior rebellion in Colombia has been crushed. The legation officials say the move delivers the death blow to the rebellion.
The gun boat General Pinzon arrived at Colon this afternoon from Savanilla carrying news that Uribe Uribe and Castillo's revolutionaries were defeated at Rio Frio and both generals were captured.
The Rev. George B. Eager of the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary said in Louisville that Jerusalem was better under Turkish rule than under Jews and claimed Jews were crucifying Christians in the Holy Land. Rabbi Enelow demanded Eager recant and called him undignified and un scholarly.
A Yorkton report says 1,800 starving Dukhobors are marching toward the town three miles out. Special constables are sworn in as citizens fear hunger and seek aid. The group, singing hymns, carries the sick and infants on stretchers seeking food.
Official figures from Scranton based coal companies show 90 percent of their collieries in operation and output at about 75 percent of normal. A later note from Wilkesbarre describes Mitchell Day events with a planned mining suspension and demonstrations led by Thomas Haggerty, marking the anniversary of the 1900 strike.
In Indianapolis on October 28, nineteen people were indicted by the Marion County Grand Jury for grave robbing conducted over months. Nine teen include four physicians and an undertaker among others. Cantrell led the gang with guards at cemeteries to steal bodies for medical and dental colleges. Cantrell confessed after interrogation, naming doctors and colluding colleges, as more bodies were found and additional arrests followed.
President Roosevelt will travel to Oyster Bay next Monday to cast his ballot on Tuesday. Election returns will be received at Sagamore until night. He plans to attend a Masonic celebration in Philadelphia on Wednesday and return to Washington that night or Thursday morning. Mrs. Roosevelt is expected to accompany him and move into the remodeled White House. Several second story living rooms are ready for occupancy.
Mrs Jane Berryhill Thomas, who runs a boarding house in St Joseph Missouri, recalls a three year old kidnapping from Agency Ford by strangers in a covered wagon. The child endured hardship as she moved through many Western States before learning by phone today that her mother, Mrs Marty Berryhill, is a Bruins residence. The abductors deserted the child, and she was separated from her family for years.
In Lansing Michigan on October 28 striking students at Michigan Agricultural College said no classes would be held until the faculty reinstates sophomores and freshmen suspended for participation in the rush. No classes were held again.
Paris report details how bride to army colonel lost a $50,000 wedding dowry to playwright Jetey Malleval. He gambled away the money at baccarat after honeymoon in Paris. Malleval arrested at his father-in-law's urging. bride questioned by gendarmes.
In Bowling Green Ohio Probate Judge Angus considers if a monument for pioneer George Boetsch can be sold to settle his estate debts. Administrator Eugene Rheinfrank contends Frederick Hillabrand misused funds used for Boetsch’s funeral and monument after insolvency.
Mrs Frank Duncan of Indiana was reported dead and an obituary ran in Ohio papers. She was found alive in Marion after relatives in Ohio believed the notice true. She suffers rheumatism but is not critically ill.
The Bryan special collided with a freight caboose at Arena Brown Canyon ten miles above Leadville at 10:10. Three people escaped alive by jumping as the caboose was thrown off the trucks. Mr Bryan was uninjured. The train was moved to Nathrop and onward to Leadville after placing the Bryan party in an empty refrigerator car.
Rome reports the Propaganda Congregation will consider appointing Archbishop of Chicago in November after Archbishop Feehan’s death. Bishop J J Spalding of Peoria is favored though objections to Bishop Muldoon’s administration are noted while Father Rordan is ill. If Spalding is not chosen the transfer of Archbishop Ireland of St Paul is discussed.
The Korea arrived at noon from Yokohama breaking the Pacific crossing record. The new steamer departed Yokohama on the 18th and completed the voyage in ten days.
Negotiations for merging the Pittsburg Coal Company and the Monongahela River Consolidated Coal and Coke Company are under way with combined capitalization of 110 million dollars and assets around 120 million. The deal aims to form a dominant bi coal concern and end their long rivalry.
From Sofia reports that leading Macedonians claim insurgents used dynamite to inflict severe Turkish casualties in the Kresha Pass fighting. The engagement continues with ongoing clashes and no clear end in sight.
