A vast Cincinnati audience heard Senators Foraker Hanna and Beveridge discuss issues of the day at Music Hall. The event highlighted patriotism and the Republican stance amid calls for curative acts on trusts and streetcar concerns.
Senators Hanna and Beveridge rested until the last moment before a planned public reception. They arrived late to the meeting at Music Hall after a long ride from Cleveland and were escorted by Republican leaders. After dinner they left for the Pennsylvania Depot to begin a tour of Indiana, with Fairbanks and Dick absent.
The trustees vote 13 to 8 to segregate sexes in freshman and sophomore classes at the University of Chicago. The measure aims at temporary separation and is not a reversal of co education, though described as a first step toward that goal.
The three senators trade sharp lines on taxation and the Republican record. They mock Johnsons tax stance and frame the election as a test of the party lineage from McKinley to Roosevelt. They warn of calamity if Democrats gain, and praise perceived strong city governance and free enterprise.
A partisan excerpt attributes to Senator Beveridge a critique of abandoned issues and a call to remove perceived barnacles from the ship of state.
