Wilkesbarre Pa October 16 1902 delegates from Districts 1 7 and 9 urged to attend a convention in Wilkesbarre beginning October 20 to act on the Presidents proposal. each union to elect delegates by one vote per 100 members with credentials submitted by Sunday afternoon. hotel details to follow. Claude O'Brien and Earl Whitney, accused in the Lexington murder of A B Chinn, offer shifting confessions about who fired the fatal shots. Whitney claims O'Brien did it, while O'Brien denies any shooting, suggesting Chinn or Whitney as the killer. Over 150 visitors crowd the Kentucky jail as tension mounts and a priest is summoned for O'Brien.
Governor Nash addressed a crowded Greenfield opera house amid heavy rain. Senator Hanna praised Nash for fulfilling promises while highlighting Republican progress and tax restraint, with talk of national policy and Roosevelt McKinley era continuity.
The self confessed robber and accused murderer Claude O'Brien, once a Cincinnati resident, was recognized in the White's restaurant by staff from Fourth Street. He lived at the Lee House, quit work after three days, showed paintings he claimed to own, avoided eye contact, and asked for money to pay room rent. He disappeared after being shown in the Tribune.
Washington C H October 16 Senator Hanna and party draw a full house as Governor Nash Harry Daugherty Congressman Kyle and Hanna speak. The senator urges support for Nash administration and a Republican majority in Congress to protect business. Dozens are left outside unable to find seats.
In Jerusalem on October 16 the cholera epidemic accelerated across Palestine with Gaza bearing the heaviest impact. Reports indicate thirty to forty deaths daily in Gaza as the outbreak intensifies.
Kingstown reports a violent Soufriere eruption with earth tremors the day before. From 9 p.m. to 4 a.m. the volcano belched fire and noise, with incandescent clouds and heavy sand fallout near the cone. Craters remained active and Bridgetown felt a sulfurous dust outbreak.
In Columbus Ohio on October 16 Labor Commissioner and ex president of the United Mine Workers of America M D Ratchford called the strike situation a great moral victory for President Mitchell. He praised the Roosevelt board for arbitration and predicted the board will favor the miners. He traveled through the anthracite district and urged that coal be weighed with a check weighman present, noting most mines pay according to estimated weight.
Archie Woodin, 23, under arrest in Mt. Pleasant Michigan after a divorce suit escalation led to a spree that left three dead in two farms six miles apart. He bought a revolver, shot Joseph Gulick, then killed his mother in law, a 14 year old girl alarmed neighbors, and later killed a woman on her own farm before fleeing on a borrowed horse. Woodin, a Cuban War veteran, showed remorse only for not killing himself.
Cleveland October 16 All hope that the ten men who left the floundering steamer Cree Lockwood off Ashtabula Lake Erie Monday night were alive was dispelled when the overturned boat they embarked in was picked up late this afternoon off the port by the J G Grammer. Names of the missing include Second Mate John Brittz Toledo Chief Engineer David Burns Marine City Henry Rossman Fair Haven Fireman Fred Green Marine City Fireman Julius Schmidt residence unknown Joseph Povey Fair Haven William Miller deck hand residence unknown and two deck hands and one fireman with names not known.
Adelaide Cawley aged 7 died at South Side Hospital making the fifth death from the Homestead tragedy. Charles Cawley is in Allegheny County Jail charged with committing the deed.
Caracas reports say the revolutionists are losing positions gained at Cuji as fighting resumes near La Victoria. Government fears lack of ammunition from Caracas and reports from Willemstadt claim rebels hold the German railroad to Valencia. Official circles still expect government victory despite censorship of Caracas despatches.
In the La Victoria fight near Curacao the Castro commanded army and rebel forces clashed as artillery was reduced from fifteen guns to four. The town was crowded with wounded and provisions were exhausted.
Port au Prince report says provisional government troops march on Gonaives and revolutionary leader M Firmin has embarked on the U S cruiser Cincinnati to exile likely to Jamaica or St Thomas. The French cruiser D Assas left for St Marc after re occupation by government forces.
Marietta Ohio October 16 Senator Hanna emerged as the prime mover in settling the coal strike. He told an Associated Press representative of a three hour conference with J Pierpont Morgan in New York October 3 and said Morgan agreed to use his good offices with Roosevelt's backing to bring a settlement.
Wilkesbarre Pa Oct 16 The Executive Boards of the three anthracite districts of the United Mineworkers unanimously recommended acceptance of the presidents arbitration plan to a delegate convention. Mitchell said he supports the commission chosen by the President and the strike could end with a convention ruling and a resumption of mining soon.
