The cornerstone ceremony marked the start of construction on the new St Louis municipal building with an estimated cost of 1.5 million dollars. Officials from the city announced the project and expected completion within the planned fiscal period.
St Louis officials canceled aeroplane and dirigible flights during Municipal Day ceremonies as police handle crowds for corner-stone layings. Aviators Curtiss Osborn etc. expected to fly later. Ozmont failed to take off after practice due to trees at Forest Park.
Mildred T. Cetzok eight daughter of Mr and Mrs Joseph Cetzok died early this morning from pneumonia. Mr Cetzok is proprietor of the Olympic Hotel.
Baron Shilus, head of Japan’s trade commissioners who visited Cleveland, sent a $100 check for Christmas gifts for cripples and aged inmates at the Warrensville colony near the city. He showed strong interest in the institution during his stay.
Stanley Milward, member of the Kentucky state board of control, resigned to Governor Willson. He had stepped down weeks earlier to focus on private business and to devote time to personal needs, leaving a $2,500 annual state post.
A large section of the viaduct over the New York Central tracks near Elk and Michigan streets in Buffalo was wrecked by dynamite. Dr Froderick A Cook polar explorer and Mrs Cook drew a near panic crowd at Union Station as centennial week visitors mobbed them for autographs and greetings. The couple escaped unharmed after a crush formed while the reception committee tried to shield them. Tonight Cook gave an illustrated lecture at the Coliseum.
Abbott Lawrence Lowell assumed the Harvard presidency in a scenes of pageantry on October 6. A 56 000 strong audience watched as he pledged his policies emphasizing specialization and breadth. Eliot lauded Lowell while the alumni voiced support for the new leadership.
Dr. Frederick Cook, en route to St. Louis, asserts he found no reason to withdraw his claim that Peary sold Cook's supplies. He stands by the letter to Captain Bernier but says he would not word it the same today.
Commander Peary formally notified the National Geographic Society of his willingness to submit polar exploration records to a commission of American scientists. Wreck of Santa Fe Passenger Train No. 17 near Temple Texas caused one death and seven injuries with railroad officials concluding it was the act of wreckers. Engineer T McGinnis died. injured include William Greer J W Winfield RE Gresham Eliza Robinson and S H Hollis among others.
Chicago reports a morning fog causing multiple accidents. A rear-end collision between two suburban trains left a score of passengers injured, four seriously. A street car crash with a wagon injured one severely. Minor accidents occurred citywide before the fog lifted.
Three Maritime Express trainmen died after a head on collision with a freight train at Nashos Creek on the Inter-Colonial line. One man buried under wreckage was fatally injured and two brakemen were seriously hurt. No passengers reported injured. Engines and several freight cars wrecked.
Spokane report says passenger train No 4 on the Spokane Portland & Seattle railway was derailed by a rock slide at Fountain 100 miles west of Pascok. Engineer C A Bigsbie died and the fireman was injured. No passengers were hurt.
William Randolph Hearst, once defeated for New York mayor, was nominated for mayor at a Cooper Union mass meeting of about 4,000 supporters. The event signaled a new third party push and called for a city wide ticket with a platform opposing Tammany and the Republican machine.
L. I. Heller, president of the Sterling Motor Car Company of Binghamton, was killed instantly when his automobile was struck by an east bound Lehigh Valley train near Waverly New York.

In St Louis Missouri the St Louis No 3 balloon captains prize after a 41 hour 35 minute flight at 580 miles from St Louis landing at Wahkon Minnesota. Von Puhl the pilot claimed victory amid a competitive field with other craft making lengthy journeys across Arkansas Missouri and Minnesota.
