President Roosevelt urges immediate resumption of coal mine operations to avert a winter fuel famine. He appeals to operators and miners to set aside disputes for the public good, warning of dire nationwide consequences and urging sacrifice and patriotism.
Reading Railroad head George F Baer declares in a Roosevelt statement that the government should restore order by force if needed and run mines with nonunion workers. He refuses negotiations with the miners and rejects Mitchells plan for a Roosevelt commission seeking a local arbitral path.
A joint statement from George F. Baer and Thomas outlines that state and federal powers may be needed to end the coal strike violence.
