William Cox fatally shot his wife in Evansville Indiana then killed himself. He had long threatened to kill her. The act occurred before the couple's young daughter, leaving no chance for the husband’s survival. The wife, from Kentucky, was described as beautiful and well connected.
A Harrrismith dispatch says Boer prisoners report General Dewet was shot in the arm during a recent attempt to breach a blockhouse line near Ismith and Van Reenen by New Zealand forces in the Orange Free State Colony.
The Indianapolis Fire Inspection Bureau ordered a fire insurance rate advance of 5 per 1000 for the south side stretch of Washington Street from Illinois to Pennsylvania including four corners. About 3 million dollars of coverage is affected.
Melvin Hall informed lawyers he would drop extradition fights to Canada for a long list of crimes. The alleged frontier band leader, once hiding under the name Smythe near Watertown, has been ordered surrendered after a U S Commissioner ruled for extradition and a fifteen day appeal stay. He plans to go to Canada once an officer arrives.
In Bellefontaine Ohio on March 4 Mr John Hoffman and Mrs Eilen Arters of Pottsville Pennsylvania reunited for the first time in forty four years. They were separated in 1858 as residents of Lancaster County Pennsylvania after a vender visit sparked childhood memories and led to the discovery.
Society notes announce the marriage of Miss Fanny Hilb of Richmond Street to Louis Kahn at the Grand Hotel. The ceremony followed by a banquet featured Dr Grossman. Guests included numerous Hilb and Kahn relatives and local society members. The couple will reside with the bride’s parents on Richmond Street after a two week New York visit.
The Cincinnati Typographical Union No. 3 Women’s Auxiliary held its first progressive euchre party at the Burnet House, drawing about 300 attendees. Prizes were costly, refreshments served in the dining parlor, and the group plans more social events after six months of organization. Officers listed include Mrs. Donnelly President and Mrs. Halloran Vice President.
Cape Town March 4 Cecil Rhodes, long ill, is reported improving after a period of illness that slowed his activities.
