Alfredo Breceda Carranza’s secretary accuses General Felipe Angeles of inciting the split among Constitutionalists and acting as Huerta’s agent. He cites Angeles’s role in tensions with Villa, leadership shifts, and mediation efforts amid Niagara Falls talks.
Special Dispatch reports from Oyster Bay June 27 that Theodore Roosevelt will conduct the fall campaign from Sagamore Hill after advice to rest. He will see few visitors, with John McGrath moving to Sagamore Hill to manage affairs. Roosevelt outlines leadership for the Progressive campaign with state and national chairs guiding strategy while staying in touch with key leaders like George W. Perkins. Senator Clapp expects strong Progressive support in Minnesota and the Midwest. Frank Munsey and Judge Wanamaker also visited.
A Senate resolution seeks authority to subpoena Senators and Washington correspondents to investigate leaks from the Foreign Relations Committee. Chairman Stone introduced the measure, aiming to cross examine members and possibly broaden inquiry while defending committee secrecy and accusing leakers of dishonesty.
Missouri petitions signed by more than 33 000 voters request a constitutional amendment to grant women the ballot. If validly filed with the Secretary of State, the measure will be placed on the November ballot.
A fire near the western edge of the disaster district in Salem Montana destroyed three additional residences. A strong wind spread sparks over unburned areas, with $25 000 in damage. Fire units contained the blazes by 11 pm. Relief officials faced urgent sanitary needs in homeless camps as militia and health officials set up two official camps and planned a third. Each shelter tent held four cots, with some tents housing nine or ten people. No looting reported and order remained.
In Freeling Virginia two longtime friends James Vanover and Anderson Estep climbed Cumberland Mountain near Osborns Gap and fought a deadly duel over Estep's attentions to Vanover’s sister. Vanover was shot twice and Estep three times, both surviving initial wounds and planning surrender after the third shot.
A powerful storm swept through Wisconsin Minnesota and Iowa causing severe track washouts across rail lines including Burlington St Paul Northwestern and Southeastern railroads. Water flooded streets in LaCrosse Arriving in Freeberg and New Albin sand and mud buried fields crops ruined and land permanently damaged by wind. The Lavold tobacco factory in Viroqua collapsed and a parsonage was struck by lightning.
J M Heimburger from Hebron North Dakota took his two young sons into Lauderdale woods and tried to kill them with a hatchet then drank poison and killed himself. The boys were found and rushed to a Miami hospital with injuries believed fatal. The incident follows heat induced mental imbalance.
Columbus June 27 Liberal forces led by attorney Graham P. Hunt announced plans to circulate petitions for an initiated amendment to Ohio’s constitution. The measure would ban statewide prohibition and county option, wiping out county option laws and requiring 104 000 signatures. The issue pits wets against drys in one of the state’s most bitter campaigns, with cross group support from German American Alliance Liberal League and various liquor interests.
Special Dispatch reports Clyde Springer aged 19 of St Marys O collided a motorcycle with a horse cart at high speed. A shaft pierced his left chest near the heart and into the neck. His left lung stopped functioning.
Panicked depositors drained the North Avenue State Bank on North Avenue Chicago losing over 70000 in two hours. Crowds waited in line at noon as police faced a riot call during the run. The bank, part of Colonial Trust and Savings Bank, was later acquired by Central Trust Company of Illinois amid two weeks of damaging gossip about Colonial's credit.
Paris June 27 Pol Plancon the noted opera singer who has been ill for weeks was slightly better today. He suffers from general debility and recent weakness raised anxiety but the attending physicians have not given up hope for his recovery.
Merrill Moores of this city was nominated by Republicans of the Seventh Indiana District at their convention in Indianapolis. Moores is a classmate of former President Taft.
