A dramatic verdict reading in a murder case sent shock waves through the courthouse as jurors deliberated for five hours. The case centered on the killing of Billy McClintock and ended with the shepherd acquitted amid a bedlam scene in the courtroom.
The Cincinnati Board of Education heard Edward D. Roberts outline a plan to add and improve more than twenty public school buildings, with a proposed budget over a million dollars. A junior high at Withrow High School would serve 800 to 1,000 students from Hyde Park Kilgour Mann Oakley and possibly Evanston, consolidating shops and auditorium. The board will act at Monday’s meeting, with six grade elementary reorganizations already authorized for Rothenberg and Bloom.
Federal agents stationed at Central Bridge chased bootleggers smuggling moonshine into Ohio. Charles McCauley, 24, captured with five gallons. Abraham Linder, 31, arrested after a collision, with twenty gallons found. One occupant escaped.
Washington June 26 The La Follette Wheeler led third party collapses with the Chicago convention disarray and La Follette’s refusal to back old form The movement dissolves as supporters seek a broader single party appeal and labor leaders see Democrats as best for absorbing remaining La Follette factions.
In New York court, Mrs. Margaret Pinkham testified that Thomas H. Symington believed Ida May Symington admitted in 1924 to an illegitimate child at age 16. She described his threats to make the child heir and urged signing birth details. A real estate man testified about a Mas on temple land gift from Mrs. Mary Emery in Cincinnati supporting a $2.5 million project.
Judge Stanley Struble of Common Pleas Court ruled that village liquor courts violate constitutional protections by giving mayors a pecuniary stake in liquor convictions. He called the system a menace to liberty and a mockery of justice, warning of broader implications for prohibitions if upheld. The decision reversed Edward Tumney’s liquor possession conviction from North College Hill, signaling a potential overhaul of enforcement practices across Ohio.
Two youths confirmed drowned Charles Hutson 20 salesman 3608 Eastern avenue and Henry Jackson 13 newsboy 1129 West street. Two others Donald Parker 13 son of R K Parker 3552 Larkspur avenue and Charles Whitton 11 of 3116 Cinnamon street believed missing after clothing found on river bank. Police, fire crews and witnesses described swift currents and unavailing searches for the victims.
In Quebec on June 26 the tug Ocean King with nine crew aboard was rammed amidships by the Canadian Pacific liner Marloch and sank. The entire crew of nine drowned as the tug was struck and nearly cut in two while being brought to its pier.
Chicago June 26 William Darling Shepherd an attorney was acquitted of murder in the death of William Nelson McClintock. The jury deliberated five hours forty minutes and took an oath not to reveal ballots. Shepherd faces another murder charge but was allowed to sign his own bond. The verdict sparked cheers and a triumphant exit from the Cook County jail.
At the New York State Railway Association convention in Bluff Point near Plattsburgh Lucis S. Storrs urged that buses are here to stay. He warned old tactics with politicians are gone and that buses will be integrated with electric railways, not replace them, with bus service run on a scientific and profitable basis.
Paris June 27 The Chamber of Deputies approved Finance Minister Caillaux plan raising paper circulation by 6 billion francs Article II passed 328 to 119.
O R Magansen claiming army desertion opened fire on a Southern Railway train entering Greenville. Ray F Peek of Atlanta died after being shot in the head while W F Flint from Atlanta was wounded. Passengers overpowered the shooter who could not explain his actions.
John Coolidge, son of President Calvin Coolidge, was measured for height by his grandfather in June near Rutland. He stood six feet three quarters of an inch with Ris shoes, then walked to a village store to await the stage. The President and Mrs. Coolidge prepare to visit in July, spending time with the elder Coolidge.
Witnesses who testified in the Gordon Campbell and B K Wheeler trials have been subpoenaed again for a Spokane Washington grand jury investigation set to begin June 29. The earlier testimony covered the Kevin Sunburst field discovery and related matters.
Lynn Massachusetts June 26. John C Gilmartin of Haverhill aged 69 marries Emma Aldrich now Mrs Charles Kimball widow of the man who blocked their elopement 48 years earlier. The wedding reunites a family scene with the bridegrooms six children and the brides three at the Aldrich farm. They revisit the old engagement apple tree where their story began.
