Indianapolis June 2 Miss May Nickum 16 adopted daughter of C W Nickum has been identified as heiress to a large Henry County property. Orphaned at four she faded from view then reappeared after years with a charity adoption. She and two brothers once in a state asylum have drifted apart with one believed in Ohio and another in West Virginia. The Ohio brother was said to be with Charles Hall of the Big Four Freight Dept Cleveland.
Reports from Springfield say Cook County factional strife endangers the state Democratic ticket. Pickering may withdraw from Clerk of the Supreme Court race, Green resigns from Congress bid, and others including Williams Kerns Duddleston face pressure to quit amid Cook County troubles affecting the campaign.
The Senate confirmed General Crozier this afternoon as head of the Ordnance Department with the rank of Brigadier General. The vote was 44 to 12, with Senator Proctor leading the opposition and brief replies from Senators Warren, Pettus and Foraker.
Five killed and twenty nine injured in a Northern Pacific wreck near Staples as reported to the railway general offices. The dead include Engineer Walter Scott presumed lost in the wreckage, Express Messenger F O Muller, Fireman George Rasmussen, Conductor John Noble, Frank Kennedy and laborer Gladstone North Dakota. Injured include Henry Green of Minneapolis with back bruises, Fireman H Montgomery with a crushed leg, Charles Delmore unknown residence with arm fracture, F F McBride St Paul head cut and arm sprained, W F Haggard St Paul leg bruised, and Engineer E C Schultze with both legs broken and badly bruised.
Richard Olney writes to Memphis Democrats that he will not run for President and declines speaking here to help form an Olney Presidential Club. The note gestures toward organizing efforts and party support in Memphis.
A three hour meeting at Senator Hanna’s home with Representatives Burton and Dick and Senator Hanna failed to resolve the Burton dispute in Cleveland. Burton proposed Abel leave. the idea was rejected. Hanna and Burton appear allied on the Panama Canal bill, with Dick acting as peacemaker.
The wedding of Gordon Hall of Toledo and Miss Tez Jackson of Kansas was held near Cardy, Ohio. During the ceremony, guests included Captain John Greer, the bride’s grandfather and a leading county figure, who collapsed from paralysis and died soon after.
In Chicago on June 20 Mrs. Ethel L. Kirk was granted a divorce from Milton W. Kirk the millionaire soapmaker. Judge Bishop ordered alimony totaling 60000 dollars and found the desertion charge against Mrs. Kirk untrue while upholding the charge Mrs. Kirk made against Mr. Kirk as true.
Washington Indiana June 20 Rev W P Barnhill pastor of the M E church at Glendale and his son Wilfred aged 21 have vanished. The son's wife is visiting in Georgia. Family and financial troubles are hinted as motives for the elder Barnhill's sudden departure. It is alleged he left Evansville Indiana years ago for similar reasons.

F M Derwester on a farm northwest of McComb reports a small spot where drilling sounds from the Findlay oil field fifteen miles away can be heard. A neighbor shares a similar spot. no other area echoes the noise. He suspects a water vein or rock layer transmits the sound and plans physicists' examination.
London report notes Mr. Carnegie declining a request to become president of schools at Shipley. He says his work lies on the other side of the Atlantic and he is here for recreation. Officials on this side have so many requests he must decline.
Washington June 20 President Roosevelt questioned Senator Beveridge over opposing the Statehood bill. Beveridge warned against hasty action at session end fearing a political trap, while noting the fall electoral stakes and possible party gains for Democrats if new states go Republican. Roosevelt believed he could win the states regardless of Senate composition, potentially securing nine Electoral College votes.
Johann Most was convicted of printing an incendiary article in his newspaper and sentenced to one year in the penitentiary. The article appeared around the time President McKinley was shot. The Court of Appeals upheld the lower court’s judgment.
