Richmond KY June 8 Mrs Nannie Nuckols is acquitted of murder after shooting Mrs Viana Black who was with her husband in Berea. The trial invokes the unwritten law defending the home and cites a prior case in Gratz Park.
Reports from Moscow describe a sharp rise in revolutionary activity with factory workers being armed and drilled under army guards. Meetings in industrial areas continue nightly as leaders seek to trigger a general strike and a clash with authorities.
The Legislative Life Insurance Investigating Committee heard that Union Central Life’s nonparticipating business, about 9 million dollars, has run at a loss since 1892. Secretary Marshall testified most of it was written after the 1893 panic with cheap premiums. He said profits may cover deficits in three years, but past policy holders cannot be reimbursed.
Eastern Ontario suffers a fierce wind and rain storm cutting wire communications to Detroit and Chatham. The city of Chatham reports unroofed houses, downed trees, and debris filled streets. In Detroit the 40 mph gusts topple trees, damage wires, and disrupt streetcar service with reports of river tragedy near Wolf's and a child swept from a bridge, though details remain unconfirmed.
William A. Ashbrook of Licking County was nominated on the 277th ballot by the Seventeenth District Democratic Convention. Final tally Ashbrook 161 Wertz 67 Hurst 19. Breaks by Tuscarawas Coshocton Holmes and Wayne Counties secured unanimous support. Baltimore June 8 Governor Warfield announced the appointment of William Pinkney Whyte to succeed the late United States Senator Gorman. Whyte, a former Maryland governor, will enter the Senate for the third time and second time by appointment to fill an unexpired term.
Guthrie Okla June 8 United States Marshal John Abernathy who was advertised to catch live wolves with his hands at the Fourth of July celebration in Newkirk Okla will not appear having canceled his engagement on the advice of President Roosevelt.
A severe wind and rainstorm raced across Ontario causing extensive damage from Hamilton to nearby towns. Trees uprooted, poles down, streetcar service halted, and forty buildings under construction toppled. The storm, clocked at 85 miles per hour, also damaged the Deer ing Agricultural Implement warehouse, Hamilton Vinegar Works, and St. Pauls Church steeple. No deaths reported though several people injured. Paris Woodstock London areas in direct path report no details yet.
Cincinnati records the hottest day of the year with a high of 92. Heat victims were removed to homes or the City Hospital after collapse. Henry Simon, 58, died after heat exposure at Reading Glass Works. other patients included Otto Bryer, 25, and Charles Walters, 26, both treated for heat stroke or related conditions. John Henniger, 26, died after refusing to release a fan while suffering heat effects.
On the hottest evening residents of Clifton Mt. Auburn Corryville Avondale and Walnut Hills faced a near total water outage. Mt. Auburn tanks were empty and officials offered little explanation while a suspected main drain and a street excavation in Oak Street were investigated for a burst.
Christiania June 8 Sweden will not be represented at the coronation of King Haakon on June 22. The Swedish Government says the decision reflects King Oscar's personal feelings and aims to preserve cordial relations with Norway.
