In Poitiers, Mme Monnier and her son were jailed for locking Mlle Blanche Monnier in a dark room for 25 years. Found naked and starving, she survived in a filth ridden space. Mme Monnier died in prison of heart disease amid court proceedings.
In the Chamber of Deputies Signor Guiccardini warns that Balkan unrest could spark a quick crisis in Southern Europe. He says Italy cannot be a puppet of any power and recalls Bizerta as a lesson, citing Albanian propaganda by Austria-Hungary and unstable status quo. Other speakers note Balkan tensions. The Foreign Minister Prinetti’s speech was postponed.
London dispatch notes J Pierpont Morgan will likely return in the latter part of June with partner Clinton E Dawkins. The pair will tour key business centers extending to Chicago. Dawkins recently held Indian finance post before returning to Morgan firm and contributing a War Office reorganization report praised as practical.
Paris police arrest an American woman named May S who had intimate relations with Tom Edwards, a robber who targeted the Paris American Express office in April. She is to be charged with complicity in the robbery. formerly a music hall performer and once toured the United States as Chicago May.
The June 8 Republican Convention in Toledo declared Hon. George C. Dunham as State Senator and named a full ticket: Smith Demuth Harold O W Frazier Ulysses G Denman John C Jones Peter Parker John W Newton Thomas M Barkdull Charles Webster L B Bailey C F Farnsworth Dr Christian Storz. A hearty indorsement for Senator Foraker and the National administration accompanied the report.
The Census Office released a bulletin showing the population of incorporated places in the country. It reports a total of seven thousand five hundred seventy-eight as a comparison figure to a prior total.
London June 8 The visit of Maitre Labori to England shows strained relations with Dreyfus. Labori’s friends say Dreyfus shunned him in Paris and lacks gratitude. Labori remains ardent, insisting Dreyfus was wrongfully convicted and denouncing critics.
A powerful cyclone struck Billings Eddy and Tonkawa in Kay County Oklahoma last night. It devastated towns and farms over a ten by thirty six mile area causing over 100000 dollars in losses. Eddy reports multiple fatalities and injuries while Tonkawa suffered extensive damage and many dwellings were leveled.
The State Department reports on the British Pacific cable project linking Canada and Australia. A single ship will transport and lay the 5 834% mile line with a landing site chosen near Banfield Creek on Kelp Bay. The route runs Vancouver Island to Fanning Island, then Fiji Norfolk Island and Queensland, with completion aimed for January 1, 1900,000.
Coroner investigates the death of Sarah Frances Sloan a 26 year old from Yelverton Ohio who died of consumption. Undertaker Hag gard sought permission to move the body from 142% Michigan avenue to a Dowie home after contact with the coroner. Dr Leininger of the coroner s office leads the inquiry.
In Batavia Ohio on June 8 the Gregg faction moved to set June 22 as the delegates time for a county convention to pick eight delegates for the June 24 to 26 State Convention in Columbus. The regular County Executive Committee had called for June 17 at City Hall to select delegates and a county ticket. The dispute traces to a 3 year rift over which ticket appeared on official ballots after a mandamus and court reversals. The State Central Committee backed the regulars 19 to 2, and the legal battle may be settled by the Columbus convention ruling which party remains the lawful County Executive Committee.
In Chilliwack British Columbia the Passion Play drew 2500 to 3000 native participants with visitors pushing total near 5000. Chiefs Charlie and Joseph with sisters Mary played Christ and John and the Virgin Mary. The crucifixion scene featured a blood mechanism in the cross and a centurion and soldiers enacted the death. Speeches by chiefs followed before dispersal.
Henry Reynolds, 30, assaulted Lyda Case, 13, daughter of a prominent farmer near Pringeton. He was arrested at Mt. Carmel, Illinois, after a mob along the Indiana riverfront tried to seize him during a preliminary hearing. Reynolds confessed and was jailed with Sheriff precautions to deter further mob action.
In Alexandria Indiana Mrs. Albert Painter learned two ghouls planned to steal her husband’s body from his grave. They sought $25 for the theft and stopped at a saloon beforehand. Four guardians will watch the grave nightly for a month to thwart the plot following Mr. Painter’s death in Cripple Creek Colorado.

Hartfort, Conn. William Warner a New Haven drummer found a packet of letters in an old trunk and discovered bonds of the New York New Haven Hartford Railroad and stock in Adams and United States Express. He then learned of $48,000 in accrued interest and property valued at $250,000 awaiting him at a Hartford brokerage.
A letter from Paul J. Spillane of the Ninth Infantry in the Philippines says Major Rockefeller was captured by insurgents at Tarlac and went mad in captivity before dying. The letter denies the claim that Rockefeller killed his own son in battle and died by his own hand.
The funeral of Cyrus C. Hines was held at St. David's Episcopal Church Indianapolis. Rev. CG B Sargent and Bishop Francis conducted services. Attendants included W H Miller General John Coburn Addison Harris John B Elm John S Duncan Wm A Ketcham Noble C Butler and Harry J Milligan with many 57th Indiana Regiment survivors present. Burial followed at Crown Hill Cemetery.
The Minister of Finance in St. Petersburg raises duties on American bicycles by 30 percent and on several American resins including colophonium gallpot and brewer's pitch by 2 percent. The new rates take effect a fortnight from yesterday.

Kokomo Indiana June 8 Mrs Augusta Schmidt a wealthy German baroness long resident here was placed in an insane asylum after a period of raving. Her father Baron Schingling died at sea her mother married Walter Hooper Mrs Hooper left a 60000 fortune to Augusta who later married Charles Schmidt a laborer. Eight years ago she fatally shot tenant Oscar Walton on a farm and spent her fortune fighting foreign claimants and the murder case she was convicted of manslaughter and imprisoned but released six months ago now hopelessly insane.
In Kokomo Indiana the church at Sycamore closes after Miss Aggie Long a choir member and organist dies by her own hand. The pulpit Bible holds funeral directions and the congregation has not entered since. The pastor and church members avoid the site while the cause remains a mystery and speculation points to a dramatic funeral model.

Chairman Charles Powers refused to recognize the newcomers, declared no quorum and adjourned, prompting a factional reorganization that set the county convention date for June 2.
