In Washington on June 5 the Japanese government presented its grievance to President Wilson over California anti alien law measures. Ambassador Chinda met with Wilson and Bryan as Tokyo seeks an early settlement but officials say no agreement is near. The note faces Cabinet review with Moore and Guthrie dinner coverage to follow.
Seatt le dispatch reports 1500 Japanese landed at Santos Brazil on May 15 as the first settlers in a permanent colony under Brazil Japan accord. Brazilian government has set aside 150000 acres for the colony with another large colony planned for 1913 end of year departure. New York dispatch features Wakana Utagawa a 22 year old Japanese painter—she will exhibit in New York and Boston.
Robert Roach 29 a Canton laborer returns home from Berger Manufacturing finds wife gone and shoots three family members at 1005 Gibbs street including Mrs Thisby Schatzman Ruth Schatzman and Doris Roach 16 months plus wounds two others and shoots Police Sergeant W W Fielding and drayman Happy Meyers. Police break in and Roach is arrested after a struggle.
The Senate Lobby Investigating Committee widens its probe into organized campaigns influencing legislation. Testimony links a powerful Washington lobby to sugar and tariff fights. Subpoenas target numerous individuals and groups as Overman seeks unlimited time to finish the inquiry.
A Chicago window display of Paul Chabas masterwork causes police action and public outcry. European critics defend artistic innocence while American censors deride the scene as lewd. The painting depicts a bathing maiden, celebrated for its contour and artistic composition.
In Brownsville on June 5, about Mata Moras the dead from both sides totaling 110 were laid on a pyre and burned. No prayers or funeral services were conducted.
Pittsburg June 5. Brisbane J. H. Carnegie husband of Josephine Mary Carnegie faces a further airing of marital troubles as his wife answers the desertion charge. She claims Carnegie lived with Miss Jeanette McCague, known as Carnegie’s girl, since 1906 and lavishly supported her. The suit notes Carnegie’s presence with the affair to be seen by his wife. The McCague woman also appeared as a witness in a prior breach of promise case in Cleveland.
About 150 boiler makers at Fletcher Iron Foundry in Hoboken N J walked off the job claiming a Canadian foreman waved an English flag and said it was the only flag to live under. They sent a committee to Andrew Fletcher demanding the foreman's discharge, which was refused and led to the strike.
Public Education Board adjourned after a three hour meeting as it plans to vote tomorrow on dismissal of School Superintendent I I Heeter who was found guilty of indecent actions and taking unwarranted liberties with three women by a six person committee. Attorney W B Rodgers instructed to draft the legal form of dismissal, with Heeter threatening to take the case to court. The Investigating Committee criticized the board for delaying action and rejected a meeting with the directors after condemning Heeter.
In St Louis on June 5 the Missouri Senate Wage Investigation Committee session sparked a heated exchange between Lt. Gov. Painter and Mrs. Raymond Robins. Robins argued women in industry face slavery-like conditions but deserve work, while Painter warned union urging urban concentration harms families.
Miss September Morne, linked to a nude painting circulation, appears in Baltimore with police, post office and anti vice officials debating whether the image may be shown in windows or mailed. Officials say newspapers can print it with background, stores may require removal.
Secretary Daniele ordered three officers from each battleship and as many as possible from smaller ships to attend a month long course at the Naval War College in Washington. After completion, an equal number will be rotated in from the fleet. A special course at the War College in Newport will benefit these officers.
London reports Mrs. George Cornwallis West widow of Winston Churchill’s mother ends hopes for reconciliation with her husband. The divorce trial will proceed as Cornwallis West has answered. no trial date set yet.
The Naked Truth statue for the Pretorius Sehura Daenzer memorial, designed by German sculptor W William Wandschneider, was formally approved by the Memorial Association after days of deliberation. The sculptor was notified of the decision tonight.
