Millionaire coal operator J R Whitten shot at William Miller in the Whitten home after Miller and Mrs Whitten were found together. Miller drew with both hands and Whitten disabled his fingers and hand. Miller and Mrs Whitten were taken into custody and face a Monday hearing as details spill out.
Chicago June 4 Jack Johnson the negro heavyweight champion was sentenced to one year and one day in Joliet and fined one dollar for violating the Mann white slave act. He received two weeks to file a writ of error and the $30,000 bond remains in effect. Deputy marshals left as Judge Carpenter announced the sentence and Johnson vowed to continue his fight for liberty.
John D Rockefeller successfully challenged his North Tarrytown assessment reducing it to 25000 dollars saving him about 250 dollars a year. The village trustees had raised the Kyhuit Hill mansion assessment by 50000 dollars but Rockefeller appealed and won.
Isa Furry’s reported marriage to De Wolfe Hopper in New York City sparks Broadway debate. Some deny she is Hopper’s wife while others claim she has a certificate proving the ceremony.

The couple seeks $50,000 each.
An explosion of gas at No 4 blast furnace in the Hawelton group of Republic Iron and Steel Company in Youngstown Ohio at 7 30 am burned five laborers. Joseph Nerese Patrick Muccesano were burned over their entire bodies while Ben Miller James Pandela and a fifth man suffered facial and arm injuries.
A suffragette disrupted the Derby at Epsom by rushing the track and forcing a riderless collapse of two horses. Craganour, the favorite, was disqualified after bumping, and Aboyeur 100 to 1 won 32,500 pounds as witnesses including King George and Queen Mary watched. Emily Wilding Davison lay injured, later reported among suffragette materials.
Theodore Roosevelt may withdraw opposition to uniting the Republican and Progressive parties under conditions. Progressives in West Virginia report his terms include retiring current Republican leadership and endorsement of Progressive policies. Roosevelt voice favors amalgamation only if Progressive aims are preserved amid GOP control changes.

In Farrell Pennsylvania on June 4 the constable George Bird served a warrant for disorderly conduct on Big Annie Longweight known as a local character. Mrs Longweight resisted removal by hiding clothes and curtains, then officers used a dray and tore down lace curtains to cart her to jail after a.housevisit that drew a crowd.
New York June 4 Columbia University today graduated over two thousand students the largest class in its 159 year history. It is described as the largest body ever to depart a single university in this or any country at one time.
Pittsburg June 4 Coroner Jamison and John D. Meyer with attorneys for Mrs. Alice Wessels Miss Nell Bara and Miss Margaret Yenney refuted Beulah Kennards charges in defense of School Superintendent Heeter. They warned of slander suits if accusations continued. The Board of Education reexamined Heeter testimony in a near two hour session planning further action for tomorrow.
Senator Pomerene testified before the senatorial committee on lobbying, defending broad citizen access while condemning deceptive tactics. He listed Sugar Trust objections and noted he faced hundreds of visits from supporters of tariffs, insisting legitimate constituent outreach is proper.
