A collision of two interurban trains in Illinois results in seven deaths and twenty three injuries. Victims were trapped in a wooden coach, and rescue workers aided by Danville crews extricated survivors and treated the injured at the scene.
Two Illinois Traction interurban trains collided head on near Danville Illinois, killing seven passengers in the smoking compartment of the eastbound coach and injuring twenty three. Motorman Pat Cummins blamed airbrake failure. one train backed to a siding for passing. Noted dead include Frank Craig and Dr Charles B Johnson. Authorities and volunteers rushed aid from nearby towns.
The Interstate Commerce Commission charged the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad with violating the Clayton anti trust law by acquiring control of the Western Maryland Railway. The ICC ordered the company to show cause on July 2 why it should not divest its interest. The action follows prior probes into railroads for stock holdings in other lines.
Lawrence Lupo a boxing promoter and manager once acquitted of a Maple Village murder was shot behind a car and dumped in a Cleveland side street. He had survived prior shootings including a nasal injury after leaving hospital.

Seven men captured near Lebanon Indiana after a car chase were held on $5 000 bonds each in the Broadmoor Country Club robbery. Police suspect Chicago bandits staged the attack during a dinner dance as 200 guests were herded and valuables were taken. Names given include Carl Scoville and Clarence Forte of Indianapolis and several Chicago men.
Washington May 31. Southern coal operators announce plans to protest to the Interstate Commerce Commission against lake cargo rate cuts by Northern railroads to Ohio Pennsylvania coal mines. After a Federal Court halted ICC from blocking cuts West Virginia Kentucky and Tennessee are affected. Protests and potential litigation loom.
In Omaha Nebraska on May 31 Alice Brainard a seventeen year old high school student was shot by Walter Suchart as she walked home from school. Suchart then killed himself. School mates said jealousy caused the attack and that he and Alice had quarreled.
The youthful Earl of Kinnoull known as Kinney will marry Miss Mary Ethel Isobel Merrick whose mother runs London dance clubs. The ceremony occurs at the Registry Office after a prior engagement and includes family connections to other peers and a January divorce. The couple's ages are listed as 26 and 25 respectively.
News reports from Belgrade describe clashes between rioting students and police and firemen around the Imperial Czar Restaurant. Barricades formed as demonstrations continued overnight. Casualty estimates place wounded around sixty, with unconfirmed reports of student deaths and several mounted officers harmed.
The Lucas County Grand Jury will convene to consider a first degree murder charge against Charles J. Hoppe 26 charged with the death of seven year old Dorothy Sielagowski Hoppe pleaded not guilty at arraignment and insanity is his claimed defense Coroner Frank G Kraft noted Hoppe had a prior automobile theft conviction and a mental defect finding Police precautions were heightened during the arraignment as Hoppe reportedly confessed to abducting and strangling the girl after entering through a back door.
The freight steamer Kershaw bound from Boston to Norfolk was hit by the steamship President Garfield eight miles east of Vineyard Haven Massachusetts at 1 30 this morning. The Kershaw sank though all crew members are reported saved.
A stable fire at Exposition Park race course in Aurora Illinois killed three horses named Sligo Branch First Hour and Gil more. The blaze destroyed the stable and over 100 valuable animals were housed there.
All Italy is aroused over the fate of the airship crew after the mother ship was cut off by apparatus and hurled against jagged rocks. Details remain scarce as officials investigate the disaster.

Mrs. E. Marjorie Warren testified that James Scripps Booth Jr a Detroit manufacturer was the father of her son and funded her divorce suit against Van Court Warren. Booth's wife knew of the paternity and acted as godmother and confidant while the custody fight nears conclusion as the court takes the case under advisement.
Spanish aviators Jimenez and Iglesias established a new world long distance non stop flight record with a radio from Nasirabad. They began from Seville aiming for Karachi about 4 000 miles away. Nasirabad is 525 miles east of Karachi and their flight would surpass the previous 4 000 mile mark held by Chamberlain and Levine.
A tense exchange between Mayor Seasongood and Councilman Judge Dixon opened yesterday's meeting. They debated city planning rules and zoning petitions, followed by a postponement of the street car speed ordinance and referral of an airplane factory site bid ordinance to the Planning Commission.
Mrs Jean Kirby 22 of Newport admits riding with two men involved in shooting two Cincinnati police officers near Central Bridge. She said she was drunk and did not know the revolvers used. She refused to give an address and was arrested for further investigation. the roadster used was found abandoned in Covington.
Richard E. Collins an attorney and former City Clerk plunged head first to his death from the High Level Bridge over the Cuyahoga River. His body was found on railroad tracks below and identified by relatives. He had been ill for a week and wandered the office in a daze following his mother's death. Collins, about 45, helped frame the Harry L. Davis petition to amend the city charter to abolish the city manager plan.
Chicago May 31 John Stewart Bryan and S E Thomason owners of Richmond News Leader Tampa Tribune and Greensboro Record purchased The Chicago Daily Journal from the late John C Eastman longtime Journal staff members will take charge tomorrow The sale price was not disclosed and negotiations had been underway for some time Eastman had planned a sale before his death and his will left control to his aides who had run the paper for twenty one years

Captain Charles Kingsford Smith and three companions began the 7,788 mile hop to Australia from Oakland at 8:51 am.
