In Paris a man walking on all fours told a policeman he was descended from the monkey. He was taken to a police station where authorities discovered he was the chief administrative officer of an insane asylum in the Orne department. Authorities suspect overclose ties to inmates and exposure to the Dayton evolution trial reports contributed to his condition.
Thirty to forty applicants from at least six states seek the Dayton high school science post left vacant by John T. Scopes amid ongoing trial proceedings. Walter White says most applicants seek the publicity, not the salary, and notes that the new biology text aligns with the anti evolution law. The Dayton board will select after the case ends, with two Tennesseeans among the seekers and contingent openings for next session.
Clarence Darrow, counsel for Scopes and Bryan Sr., says Scopes was condemned from the start and argues a higher court should review the case. He says many Christians reject a literal Bible and notes evolution is accepted by many scientists. He also challenges prayer in court and questions Bryan as the sole interpreter of religion.

Clyde Jones and his 18 year old wife Helen Jones were in a Norwood car when she took poison after which he returned from a drug store. Helen Jones died at General Hospital at 9 45 PM. She left no clear motive for the act. The couple married in Dayton six months ago and recently moved to Norwood.
New York July 18 A federal inquiry will begin Monday into bootlegging in 70 cities across 29 states following a raid on offices at 1123 Broadway. The operation yielded over twenty thousand customer names and addresses and led to eight arrests for conspiracy with more expected. Authorities say the ring sold high seas liquor, using counterfeit stamps, with price lists showing rye, bourbon and champagnes.
Chicago July 18 officials report a second alleged Robert Scott affidavit claiming Russell T. Scott is innocent and the real killer is his brother. The letter, dated July 16 from the city main post office, echoes a prior telegram that delayed Scott’s execution. Law partners say they secured two witnesses’ affidavits and proof Ball cannot operate his telegraph key.
Michael Hauer a Cheviot roofing contractor and former officer aided by Frank Smith deputizes him to transport two youths after a crash. The chase ends with the youths captured near Miami Town and held on suspicion as Hauer recalls old police days.

Stanley Shurtz 32 of Norwood was killed when his car was struck two miles south of Wapakoneta Ohio by a Western Ohio Traction car. His wife and 12-year-old daughter Caroline were cut and bruised and 18-year-old Charles Glick of Norwood was injured possibly fatally. Shurtz son Ronald 14 was unhurt. Mrs Shurtz may lose her left eye. Details were not disclosed. The Shurtz family had left Cincinnati for a weekend Ohio trip.
Philip Siegel, 21, a junior typesetter, was arrested in New York on charges of attempted extortion after delivering a black bag of worthless paper to Edward W. Browning, a real estate operator. Browning, who had received threatening letters demanding $50,000, identified Siegel as the man who met him with detectives present. Siegel allegedly confessed. Browning, seeking publicity for his adoption offer, had implicated the Hoyt Avenue case in which a young girl would be provided. Detective work credited Mayor Hylan and Inspector John D. Coughlin for coordinating the case and guarding Browning and his adopted daughter Dorothy Sunshine.
