A bustling betting scene unfolds with ticket writers and cashiers debating odds and payouts. Bets are placed and rejected as the crew schemes to maximize profits while a boy hawks apples nearby and a reader laments losses in a backstage tavern atmosphere.
State officials file three petitions in Circuit Court seeking a temporary injunction to close Covington poolrooms and block property owners from leasing spaces for poolrooms. The action targets the Turf Ex meat, Power House, and White House rooms, with Judge Shaw hearing an earlier closeout suit Thursday.

Tokalon and Clifton Forge headed the day’s winners, with Avon taking the five furlongs event at 20 to 1 and Harlequin odds favored in other races. Track fast, weather warm, six races listed with times and placings.
A wading party at Fernbank near the muddy Ohio river ends in tragedy when Miss Anna Bruening 25 Addyston Ohio drowns after losing grip on a log and being swept into an eddy. Miss Maggie Butler Fernbank is rescued by Kirby Harten who dives in to save her. The body was recovered 300 feet from the accident site by Samuel Sint. Deputy Coroner Cameron and Clerk Kiehborth investigated the incident.
William H. Parham a prominent Cincinnati Black leader died at 1240 Chapel Street Walnut Hills after four weeks of heart trouble. A Virginia born educator lawyer and legislator he was the first colored graduate of Cincinnati Law School the first notary in Ohio and the first colored man to serve in the state legislature. He influenced bills aiding African Americans and was active in Masonry and local charitable institutions.
In Marietta Ohio, Common Pleas Court opened a case seeking sole custody of Frances Anna and Walker Lee Cisler. Mrs Sara W Cisler, divorced wife of Dr Louis H Cisler, asks for custody change and raised support to $20 monthly per child. Court adjourned sans verdict with further witnesses planned.
George Mittendorf of 836 Clark Street was bitten repeatedly on his legs when a bull dog attacked him while hunting down the river. He drove off the dog with a club and later sought treatment at City Hospital in Cincinnati where his wounds were cauterized.
The Banana Growers' Association announces a shift from selling by the bunch to by weight, effective August 1. Current high grade bananas weigh about five pounds per dozen and cost twenty cents, with peddlers’ cries fading from markets.
Lonuga Pagetti, a homeless man, trudging toward Cincinnati along the railroad near Foster's Crossing, fell and broke three ribs after being struck by an iron rail. An express train narrowly missed him as he pulled clear. He was taken to Cincinnati City Hospital for treatment.
Eleven Welsh miners who arrived on the Haverford as contract laborers were deported back the same voyage to Rock Fort and Arragon Georgia. The July 9 report notes their shipboard status and removal.
Two masked men halted northbound Freight Train No 24 on the Omaha Road near Mankato Minnesota. They seized little loot and were promptly arrested by authorities.
Philip Fitzsimmons sues in Superior Court against David J. Hauss and the Fitzsimmons Telephone Manufacturing Company to regain control of 182 shares. Fitzsimmons, president, accuses secretary Hauss of using superior stock knowledge to fraudulently gain control and seeks reinvestment of the stock in him and injunctions on Hauss and the company.
A wagon end gate collapsed at the C H D Depot injuring George Behymer age 20 of Concord Place. He suffered a sprained back and neck and head bruises with physicians fearing possible spinal injury.
