Hon. William Sheehan declares support for the gold standard should the convention ratify the action, and asks the convention to allow another candidate if the majority finds his position unsatisfactory. He requests to decline the nomination at the price so another can be named before adjournment.
Special dispatch reports Parker's demand for endorsement nearly granted as the convention sent a telegram stating the platform is silent on the subject since it is not a campaign issue. The convention voted to send the telegram with 774 in favor and 194 against.
Miss Bertha Coldbear a 25 year old San Francisco heiress to a 5 million fortune leaps to death from a ninth floor Waldorf Astoria window. Her cousin Miss Marian Warren who guarded her two months is prostrate and under care. The tragedy follows months of melancholia after her father S S Doldbear a wealthy San Francisco real estate dealer died eight months ago.
General Oku's forces seize Kai Chou after a brutal clash in which about 500 troops died or were wounded. Russians incur heavier losses and withdraw in retreat leaving numerous casualties. Capture extends Japanese line across the Liao Tung Peninsula from the Yalu to the gulf near Kai Chou. Kai Chou lies south of Yin Kow near New chwang.
The town of Tatchekiao sixteen miles east of Newchwang was reoccupied Friday morning by a heavy Russian force. Reinforcements are reported daily from Liao Yang and Mukden as the position is solidified after the prior occupation.
Richard T. Ryan age 30 of Wapakoneta was lodged at Central Police Station by Sheriff W. L. Melchine. He administers his uncle John Ryan estate and is alleged to have misappropriated funds leaving accounts short by several thousand dollars. Ryan was captured by the Sheriff at New Vienna.

Leaders debated sending a telegram to Parker to preserve his nomination while signaling gold standards. Davis of West Virginia named VP after Parker’s concessions.
In St Louis on July 9 delegates awaited a telegram from Judge Parker amid rumors of a gold-pledge demand. Governor Vardaman urged reading the message to resolve disorder and guide the convention as debates over the Parker telegram continued.
