City officials warned a $1,000,000 operating deficit for the last half of 1925 will require legislative relief. Options include a June extra tax levy, state mandated levy, or deficiency bonds. Bonds unlikely but possible if other measures fail. New city manager government would face heavy debt and hospital lease costs, complicating early 1926 operations.
Urbain Ledoux known as Mr Zero plans to convert Camp Memorial Church into a front factory for the unemployed. Mt Vernon Ill Jan 3 Judge J C Kern overruled motions for a new trial for Mrs Hilsie Sweetin and Lawrence M Hight convicted in the murder of Wilford Sweetin. He sentenced Hight to life imprisonment and Sweetin to thirty five years, denouncing her cruelty and noting her admission of poisoning her husband three times. He praised Hight’s mind but condemned the scheme and urged the couple to consider their children who are left fatherless and motherless. Tears flowed as the judge spoke at sentencing.
The Freeport New York store manager John Weichorn reports a Christmas Eve robbery yielding $15. The thief later sent clippings and a note threatening to return for the missing money. A Baldwin Illinois robbery Friday night saw another $26 taken from a Federal food store.
