Republican leaders in Columbus announced that a national convention will not be called next year, delaying the state central committee meeting to arrange a state convention. Harry M. Daugherty said a state platform and ticket endorsement will likely be organized, after discussions with Sherman Granger and W. L. Parmenter.
Washington reports former Congressman Pew Howland says regulars and Progressives unite for the next battle. The Republican National Committee adopts a plan to cut Southern representation to 16 percent and calls for a 1916 convention, with a three member subcommittee to urge ratification.
Mrs. Elizabeth Schadler, sister of Hans Schmidt, testified again in the murder trial of Anna Aumuller. The exchange highlighted Schmidt's early religious mania and bloodlust as a child, with sworn statements from acquaintances about his abnormal youth. Schmidt may take the stand tomorrow.
New York motorists faced fines for excessive lights. Clifford Schaufele, owner of a car, was fined 10 dollars under a new law banning lights that dazzle traffic. The magistrate held court on a street corner and had Schaufele drive past to test the lamps.
In Mattoon Illinois two premature babies survived after births in separate homes. One infant at the Alfred home showed no life at birth and required artificial respiration before circulation returned. The Houser baby, delivered at Memorial Hospital after an emergency operation, also survived. Both mothers and infants are reported healthy with attending physician Dr. Albert T. Summers.
Tears of happiness filled spectators as Adelina Buttacatayoli a 5 year old girl received 310000 in Queens County Supreme Court from Justice Garretson after a May accident involving a James A Stewenson Company truck. Doctors notes say the child lost a leg and an arm.
Dorothy Harber of Bluffton recounts an assault in which two robbers tied her to a chair near a gas jet and ransacked the house for about $45. She narrowly escaped asphyxiation when her brother found her. she received a grave kick but no internal injuries are feared.
Deputy Commissioner William J. Wright reports a private facility at the Tombs Prison teaching inmates to feign mental illness. The investigation centers on Frank Gorgoni, accused of killing Police Sergeant Joseph McNierney, and Harrison Laux, a former Matteawan inmate said to have coached him.
New Lexington Ohio Dec 17 robbers entered the Junction City Postoffice early today and escaped with a registered package valued at 180 dollars thirty dollars in stamps and ten cents in money. Authorities say no crew. Entrance gained through a rear window.
Mrs. Jasper Lynch a wealthy Lynn Hallewood resident travels to Toms River to supervise the defense of Joseph Moriarty in the murder of Mrs. Caroline Turner at Lakewood. The case opens before Justice James F. Minturn with Lynch among the hired counsel. Moriarty, arrested at Fort Lee, maintains his innocence and is jailed.
Democratic and Republican leaders race to pass the currency bill before Christmas. Senate debate is limited to 15 minutes per amendment as a joint conference works toward final action with a possible recess to January 10 or 12 if amendments delay passage. President Wilson is expected to sign before the holiday.
The Italian Foreign Office delays a thorough inquiry into the arrest of Dorothy MacVaney of Boston on charges of spying for France. Ambassador Page denounces the delay as wariness over the incident. The MacVane sisters, famed Boston New Englanders, rose to prominence through Harvard connections and international marriages. Dorothy, a noted operatic performer, studied voice in Berlin and Rome and performed across Southern Europe. Professor Silas Marcus MacVane, former Harvard historian, resigned his chair and went abroad after his daughter's marriage.
Mayor elect Spiegel announces John R. Holmes will be Director of Public Safety and Philip Fosdick Director of Public Service. Holmes, a commercial law expert, and Fosdick, a practical manufacturer, are expected to form a strong cabinet. Holmes, born 1856 in Cincinnati, is a Harvard-trained attorney with extensive legal and public service experience. Fosdick, a life-long resident, brings broad business and contract knowledge to city affairs.
A federal court in Concord appoints a five member panel to determine if Harry K Thaw’s release on bail would threaten public safety. The committee includes Frank S Streeter Dr Morton Prince George A Blumer and two hospital superintendents.
New York police say Herman Amos an East Side blacksmith devised a scheme to blackmail alleged thieves and others fearing the police He caused three men to be arrested for robberies since September then sought to avoid testifying before the grand jury Amos was arrested on a compounding felony charge with a $5000 bail He proposed a payoff of 685 to prevent naming a man tied to a separate hold up case and the payoff plan was traced by marked bills leading to his arrest
Professor J Christian Ringwald head of Oxford College Music Department files for divorce from Ella Ringwald claiming her slovenly dress causes humiliation in public. He cites his need for refinement and notes his limited salary while she earns 500 a year plus minor property valued at six dollars.
The Rt. Rev. P T Rowe authorizes Dr W E Temple to design a wind powered electric light plant for the Episcopal Mission at Pt Hope Alaska. The wind at Pt Hope averages twenty five miles an hour and temperatures reach 55 degrees below zero. The project serves 400 inhabitants and aims to illuminate the polar night.
