British forces at Modder River engage Boers with 4.7 inch naval guns and howitzers in a brief exchange. Boers reply with a dozen guns unmasking their position. After an hour of fighting the Boer guns were silenced and fire subsided.
Governor reports population at 260 500 and predicts revenue growth from produce sheep and cattle. He renews the plea for statehood, noting resources and development prospects of the territory.

Rev. Wm. Elliott a Baptist pastor for thirty years dies at his daughter's home in San Francisco at age eighty after months of illness. Born in Ohio he preached first at nineteen and began as a traveling evangelist in 1842. In 1845 he founded the first Baptist college in the United States at Pella, Iowa.
In Youngstown on December 11 petitions totaling 270000 dollars were drafted and filed in suits seeking personal damages against railway companies and other corporations. One petition proposes a legislative change requiring actions to begin in the county where the injury occurred.

It is learned that David Stevens, chief of the Wolf tribe and oldest Wolf clan member of the Seneca Nation, died last Wednesday at the Lawton reservation. He abdicated hereditary authority when the tribe adopted a republican government in 1840s and had recently delegated chieftainship to a white man of high standing in the state.

Harriet Maxwell Converse of the Seneca organization corroborates Chief Stevens's death. She says the death feast will be held at the Long House of the Catta raugus Senecas on December 16. David Stevens was a good man and an advocate of honesty morality sobriety and cleanliness. She notes he handed down his horns to a white man of prominence but will not name him yet.
A blaze at the Penitentiary in Columbus tonight frightened inmates and staff but was put out by the pen fire brigade. A bundle of broom corn fell into a sulfur kettle, destroying much broom corn and causing significant damage to the broom factory.

Special dispatch from Cambridge Ohio reports three men injured, one fatally, after a blast of four kegs of giant powder on an empty train at King's mines eight miles east of Cambridge. Motorman Touvels Crogsley and Atkinson suffered severe burns. Atkinson died. No cause found beyond possible electric discharge from the motor.
