Mrs. Mary Hulen of East Forty-first street is organizing Chicago’s grass widow and grass widower society. She has 289 applicants for membership but aims to limit to 30. The group meets for friendly chats to share experiences and avoid repeating mistakes.
A report details a Kentucky political visit to Columbus including J W Bullitt and his son meeting Taft leaders and seeking access to the Ohio Penitentiary. A rule barred ex prisoners, but Warden Gould later escorted the party to view Bullitt family historic cells and the prison’s famed tunnel cell. The Bullitts are said to assume charge of Taft interests in Kentucky.
Hon. Joseph G. Cannon of Illinois was nominated by Republican House members for a third term as Speaker and will be reelected when the House convenes Monday. The caucus approved officers Alexander McDowell clerk Frank Lyon doorkeeper Henry Casson sergeant at arms and Samuel Langum postmaster. Porter was denied admission to the caucus as an independent candidate backed by Democrats. Cannon thanked the caucus and defended large last session appropriations while opposing centralization of power.
Thomas J. Kelly resigns as Middletown police chief and is replaced by Fred Strodbeck to face the outgoing chief. Henry Brinkmeyer, currently in charge, will lead the department. Simpson and Strodbeck are part of the city’s police leadership transition following bipartisan approval.
In Georgetown Kentucky on November 30 the Commonwealth presented witnesses to link Caleb Powers to a Republican plot to kill Goebel. Judge Field testified of mountain men, meetings with Powers and Colton, and plans for violence including a dynamite bomb. Capt Thomason and Col Bennett H Young supported the mounting threat and crowd activity at the State Capitol. A large audience, including many women, filled the courtroom.
In Columbus Ohio on November 30 the West Post G A R adopted resolutions appealing to Confederate soldiers to help suppress display of Confederate colors. They cite a reunited country with one flag and state there should be no other that would imply divided devotion.
Daytown California November 30 Eleven miners are sealed beneath the surface as a severe fire sweeps the Fremont Gower Gold Mine at the 1100 foot level. Rescue is abandoned with workers reported below that depth.
Panic swept a Chicago apartment building at Twenty sixth and State as smoke filled rooms. Mrs H B Leffler dropped her baby from a third story window into the arms of Martha Bischbure. Fire escape crews rushed to aid several residents overcome by smoke. The child was saved and carried to safety.
Cincinnati Lodge No.5 of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks will hold annual memorial services at Music Hall starting 1:30 PM. A 350-voice mixed chorus, John C. Weber Grand Orchestra, and soloists Dell Ken Yall Werthner Antionette Werner West plus Hannah Benjamin will perform. R L Holland of Colorado Springs delivers the oration.
In Washington on November 30, Mrs. Annie M. Bradley faced trial for shooting former Senator Arthur M. Brown of Utah. During final plea hours, Assistant District Attorney Turner delivered a forceful review, followed by Robert Wells for the defense claiming Brown’s actions caused his own death. The court recessed for more arguments Monday. Turner broke down emotionally during his remarks as a pistol tied to the crime was shown. Bradley sobbed and later collapsed from stress, needing attendants to administer restoratives.
Chicago jurors find Dr Lucy Hagenow guilty of murder in the death of Mrs Annie Horovitch after an operation. The 60 year old physician had prior manslaughter conviction and parole, with prosecutors claiming a thirty seven year practice and many deaths. The verdict occurred as Mrs Bradley trial neared its close.
President Amador of Panama and his party toured Mt. Vernon today as guests of the Government. They visited General Washingtons tomb and traveled aboard the yacht Mayflower.
Alexander Kristopek, convicted of attempted murder, was recaptured in Grand Rapids after escaping from the Steubenville courtroom during jury deliberations. He had shot a man at a Steubenville dance on July 4 and will be returned to Ohio.
An appeal for proxies to block the re election of Stuyvesant Fish to the Illinois Central Railway directorate asks stockholders to join a letter signed by J T Harrahan and directors Charley A Peabody Robert Walton Geelet John W Auchincloss Cornelius Vanderbilt J J Astor E H Harriman and A G Hackstaff The note says the directors will not endure Fish s attacks following the refusal to re elect him president last year
