OGDEN Utah Aug 19 Word reached here today that James Chapman one of the best known passenger engineers on the Union Pacific Railroad had been killed yesterday by a bear near Evanston Wyo Chapman was with a party of friends camping and wandered away from the others His body was found in a thicket his face and neck badly clawed and death from a severed neck artery.

A Massillon Ohio stable fire destroyed William Bantz's livery and boarding business and two homes. Hostler Lawrence Lyne died in the blaze and 62 horses perished, including race horses Effie K. and Atwood with 2:12 records. Damages total about 100000 dollars.

Japanese seen sketching fort near Atlanta in 1917
Two Japanese were found in the rear of Fort McPherson in Atlanta taking views and sketches of the fortifications and grounds. A former enlisted man reported the incident to the Department of the Gulf, which said no action would be taken unless further incidents occur.
