Chicago August 20 report from the Burlington Road general offices states they have no knowledge of any theft of mail sacks from any train on the road.
A brutal murder on Edward Horner’s farm near Merchantville New Jersey results in the killings of Mrs. Frances Horner and servant Mrs. Victoria Napoli for robbery. Suspect Charles Gibson, a Negro, is arrested in Philadelphia with two pawn tickets for watches including one inscribed Horner. Farmers report seeing a Black man flee as barn fire draws attention.
George Davis aged 38 died in a county hospital from a broken neck diagnosed by doctors. He had gone to a dentist for a difficult tooth extraction, and he says the dentist jerked him severely. Physicians believe the dentist dislocated a portion of the spinal column in the neck.
The steamer Cambrian from London reports a massive meteor struck the sea within fifty yards of its starboard bow east of 51.10W 42.05N, far south of Cape Race. Officers Thomas Hughes and Daniel Vittery describe stars moving across the sky and a whiter than white fire tail erupting from the sea, with a deafening roar and sea spray as the meteor broke. The ship escaped destruction by a narrow margin with no damage to ropes or spars.
The Hague dispatch reports nearly all governments have directed delegations at the Peace Conference to pursue obligatory arbitration and a permanent arbitral court to avert failure. Germany resists a world treaty, favoring limited scope. It is believed only nonuniform ratifying states will form a convention. Latin American nations back a permanent court with judge allocations reserved.
Berlin reports a mine disaster at Fangtse Mine near Shantung. An underground dynamite explosion killed two Germans and 103 Chinese workers, officials said.
An armed mob attacked the Postal Telegraph office at Ashfork Arizona early today firing into the building and shattering windows. No injuries reported though employees feared for their lives. Governor Kibbey pledged action and authorities arrested a suspect named Speck Smooth.
Chicago reports show both Postal and Western Union handling current business while union headquarters express strong confidence that the firms are badly crippled. Board of Trade operating forces were increased again today.

James P. Tarvin, former Kenton County Circuit Court Judge and prominent Kentucky attorney, died of asthma in the Hollenden Hotel Cleveland. The body will reach Covington at 6:50 AM and funeral plans are tentative. Tarvin, born 1847, was closely allied with Democratic politics and friend of William Jennings Bryan. he helped erect Covington's courthouse and served as judge before returning to law. He married in 1890 to Mrs. J W Belt. no children.
Mrs. Luella Ayers Myers, wife of missing Enterprise Lumber Co. president James W. Myers, arrived in the city yesterday from Germantown. She says she knew nothing of his planned departure and has heard only from relatives and friends, including a hospital letter Myers sent after leaving Cincinnati. She will stay a few days at the Sterling and has not decided her future steps.
Cape Cod Provincetown August 20 President Roosevelt did not attend the corner stone ceremony for the Cape Cod Pilgrim Memorial Monument. Governor Guild and dignitaries presided as a Mayflower salute welcomed the presidential party ashore.

He argued the Puritan arrival three centuries ago shaped continental destinies and national development, noting various European groups contributed but English settlers in Virginia and Massachusetts led the nation’s course. He urged gratitude for Puritan influence and criticized critics who focus only on faults.
American violinist Francis Rae MacMillan is reported lost in the Alps while attempting to ascend Mr Blanc. A search party is active as his brother Samuel E. MacMillan confirms the cable from Marienbach. Francis, born in Marietta, Ohio, was traveling with a party including Yvette Guilbert.
