The Saengerfest Building at the Zoo entrance collapsed after months of dismantling. A windlass failure delayed the fall as spectators watched the event with cautious excitement. The building’s ruin ends a long history of financial troubles and public protest in Cincinnati.
Foreman John Hayes announced pulling down the massive Ohio structure yesterday. By 10 A.M. a huge crowd gathered to witness the fall, as cables severed the main girders and an iron bridge weighing over fifty five tons collapsed. The wrecked frame was estimated at 400000 pounds, marking a landmark demolition.
Federal Grand Jury has returned two indictments in the Seventh National Bank case. Warrants may await later issuance as officials like Fletcher S. Heath and others remain absent from the city. Investigation centers on bank books and entries inspected by government expert William M. Hardt.
In Coffee County near Enterprise Alabama John Wesley Pennington a black man was burned alive by a mob of about 500 whites and blacks after confessing to assaulting Mrs. J C Davis. He pleaded for mercy as the flames consumed him, his head finally falling forward on the iron chains.
Samuel Morgan a gate tender with the Cleveland Lorain and Wheeling Railway testified before the Mayor that Harry Jones a U S mail wagon driver kicked off his leg and pounded him with stones during an assault Morgan swore he was beaten on the head and filed an affidavit charging assault with intent to kill in Massillon Ohio.
In Tuckerton New Jersey on August 7 during parents absence nine year old Ethel Hanly shot and killed her five year old brother Elmer with a thirty eight caliber revolver. The bullet entered and passed through the boy's head.
The transport Hancock sailed from Manila carrying the remains of 313 soldiers to the United States for burial aboard the Dix, formerly Samoa, which also sailed.
Amalgamated men behave well as one point gained by each side in the great fight is noted. Vandergrift Mills plans to supply skilled labor to other points, signaling expansion and demand for workers.
J Pierpont Morgan sent for Police Inspector Brooks and conferred as the steel strike loomed. Morgan fears possible violence from an unbalanced reader and requested heightened protection around his New York office. Two new detectives and Officer Powers were posted near Wall and Broad streets with Private Detective Smith in Morgan's office.

New York reports a rift between Charles Schwab and J. Pierpont Morgan over the United States Steel strike. Morgan presses for union mills while Schwab favors nonunion policy as Andrew Carnegie and others weigh in. A confrontation in Morgan's office ends with muttered threats and a pointed exchange about leadership and policy.
Albert B. Cummins of Des Moines was nominated for Governor by the Iowa Republican State Convention on the first ballot. The platform endorsed President McKinley’s administration and favored stronger regulation of big corporations and tariff adjustments to curb monopolies.
Fred J. Williams secretary of the Amalgamated Association reports that after the New York conference Schwab had absolute control over management and was virtually a dictator. He adds the union was accused by Schwab and Morgan of growing too strong.
Judge W. J. Harney and Ada H. Brackett depart Butte for the East aboard the same train with her daughter and governess. They stop at Livingston then proceed toward Buffalo and Chicago while Brackett’s ex divorce case is noted.
In Parkersburg West Virginia on August 7 the suit Ellis Glenn versus William Richardson was filed in U S Court for $50,000. Attorneys Caldwell and Watson represent Glenn alleging Richardson kidnaped her in Illinois and brought her back illegally against her will with force and maltreatment.
Des Moines Aug 7 A B Cummins of Des Moines was nominated for Governor at the Republican State Convention. Born in Greene County Pennsylvania fifty one years ago he rose from common schools to Wasinberg Academy and Elkader Clayton County clerkship. He later held railroad and legal positions before joining J C Cummins in Des Moines. He served in Iowa Twenty second General Assembly and four years on the Republican National Committee.
Ex Senator John M. Thurston of Nebraska says Ohio and New York will decide the next President if Republicans unite on a single candidate. He notes midsummer booms are common, some may grow, others fade, as the campaign looms. He mentions Senator Hanna as a name raised by some. Continued on second page.
