Bernard J. Mullaney, former Minneapolis and Chicago newspaperman and current private secretary to Mayor Busse, refused the mayor's offer to become chief of police.
Chicago August 5 A mother cried for her son Bobby as a street car struck him in front of their home. Neighbors and authorities rushed the 6 year old to a hospital but he died shortly after.
In White Plains, Aug 5, the Thaw sanity hearing heard more sensational tales about Stan ford White. Harry K Thaw and Thaw described alleged deeds and a 16 year old girl, the Mushroom letter, and four houses used for immoral purposes. The proceedings featured Mrs Mary Copiey Thaw and Mae McKenzie with tears in the courtroom as testimony continued.
At the Solons reunion in Sandusky Ohio discussions center on taxation and liquor. Senator Clevenger voices cautious openness while reporters note absent leaders and growing calls for reform. The event also previews campaigns and the push to revise bond votes and local option liquor measures.

He notes many decreases, limited increases, and the bill’s Philippine tariff provisions, administrative clauses, and a new corporate tax as key features.
President Taft will not define whisky until after visiting Beverly a prohibition city. He has been busy with the tariff bill and has not yet reviewed the testimony submitted at the White House.
In Seattle on August 5 L A Lari more aged 88 shot and killed himself in a hotel. He had been despondent since the death of his wife Miss Gambrill of St Louis a year earlier.
Navy to surrender David Williams, a negro mess attendant on the battleship Vermont, to Massachusetts authorities charged with manslaughter in the death following a boxing bout. The incident occurred aboard the ship while docked in Boston.
Stockholders of Central Life Securities meet in Chicago and vote to reorganize the company. A reorganizing committee is named with W A Bennett of Cincinnati as chairman and Samuel W Allerton of Chicago among members. A syndicate is formed to buy the assets from the receiver and transfer them to the new firm.
An earthquake was reported from Brest and surrounding areas. Buildings rocked and people panicked, but authorities say the disturbance was not serious.
John W. Herron father of Mrs. William H. Taft endured a paralytic stroke two weeks ago. A sinking spell Tuesday prompted urgent call to Dr. Emanuel Schwab, who revived him. Herron improved enough to hear papers read to him and discuss tariff questions but recovery remains uncertain. He is at the home of his son in law Charles Anderson on Grandin road. Mrs. Taft is not informed and unlikely to visit soon.
The Delta union of the WWI Co. T U hosted a lawn fete at Worth street foot. J H Kline, superintendent of the Working Boys' home, spoke on juvenile court work and its officers. He praised Judge Caldwell L H Weir and Mrs Cora Swett. Music and refreshments ended the program.
Olga Menn daughter of Dr Menn is said to be engaged to Baron Rothschild who died by suicide after a man posed as the baron in Chicago. Dr Menn denies any relation between Miss Menn's supposed fiancé and the baron and asserts the impostor deceived the couple. The Rothschild family remains silent on the death.
Stockholm endures severe food shortages as a nationwide labor dispute escalates. Bread stocks run low, meat is scarce, and strikers live on fish while authorities ration milk and deploy soldiers. Gas and electric plants are guarded after a dynamite plot is thwarted. Military units stationed. Gothenburg slaughterhouses closed. railroads and printers urged to join.
More than 1,000 tobacco growers in Pendleton county approve a pooling contract signaling a revolt from the Burley Tobacco Society. They rename the pool to the American Society of Equity Tobacco Growers Union, set 15 cents per pound, and require 70 percent pooling by November 1 1909 unless two thirds sign for a lower rate.
Washington observers describe a tense adjournment as the Payne tariff bill is signed by President Taft at 5 minutes after 5 o'clock Aug 5 1909. Cabinet members and lawmakers crowd the president's room amid light banter about pineapples and tariff rates.
