A man and a woman from wealthy South Side families leaped from a third floor apartment as police cornered them. Both were badly injured and rushed to House of Correction Hospital. Canton Ohio August 1 The African lion Nimbo at Carton Park zoo attacked keeper Cleve Kelly feeding it in its cage. Kelly was bitten on the back arms and side and taken to Mercy Hospital in critical condition.
Federal agents disclosed that bootlegger George Remus and caterer Richard Mazer, along with two others, were tied to a storage warehouse company in Chicago used for cutting whisky. A whisky cutting plant and a vault with counterfeit stamps and liquor were found after raids on the Fish Fans Club. Immigration officials probe Remus's past life including a possible German naturalization of his father.
David Lorbach, attorney for Mr. Remus, stated last night he is unfamiliar with his client's business interests outside Cincinnati.
Sarasota Florida August 1 W H Donaldson of New York and Cincinnati founder and publisher of the Billboard died here today He had been in frail health and came to Sarasota over a year ago at the urging of friends Charles and John Ringling His body will be sent to Cincinnati for burial
Mr. Donaldson, eldest son of William M. Donaldson a city publisher, died aged 61 after illness. He contributed to Billboard publishing, moved to New York eight years ago, but often visited the journal’s headquarters. He leaves a widow, a daughter Mrs. Roger Littleford of Fort Thomas Kentucky, three brothers and two sisters.
Refugees from former Polish German districts arrive daily in Schniedemuhl Germany as Upper Silesian plebiscite results drive displacement. Camps split families and struggle with basic care. 200 refugees per day move inland while 600 arrive locally, with plans to construct 2000 apartments in Posen Pommerania and East Prussia for farm laborers and workers.
Breslau Germany Aug 1 It was announced that W A Harriman & Co of New York has obtained an interest in the George von Giesche estate comprising Polish mining properties.
Walter McAdams a 28 year old railroad brakeman was shot and killed on a narrow road west of the Little Miami River after a man in another car refused to move and an argument escalated. McAdams died at General Hospital. two passengers with him survived. Police traced the incident to a private fishing trip where the gunman fled after the shooting.
Dorothy Dorsey eight of 96 Albert street St Bernard was struck by an Indiana registered auto and killed instantly as she stepped into the street to view a smoking street car. The driver fled after the collision while witnesses identified the victim and informed her parents. The driver’s name is being sought by Lieutenant Ringer.
Edward Rector a 62 year old Chicago attorney and DePauw University trustee died of heart trouble in Chicago after falling ill in Cleveland Ohio while arguing a case. Born July 1 1863 in Bedford Indiana he graduated from Cincinnati Law in 1885 and built a prominent practice. He contributed over a million dollars to DePauw University funds and is survived by his wife Lucy Rowland of Cincinnati.
Three sons born yesterday to Mr and Mrs Forest Canady of Croton weighing four five and six pounds. The Canady family already has two boys and two girls. The physician said all three are perfectly developed and will live.
A coroner's jury ruled prohibition agent Joseph Ferbershaw killed John Burgore without justification after Burgore fled a whisky arrest in Havre de Grace Maryland. Ferbershaw and partner R M Morgan pursued Burgore two blocks and Ferbershaw opened fire killing him as crowds gathered. The incident follows another Harford County death in a county raid last November and spurs state and federal investigations.
John Coolidge son of the President arrives at Camp Devens Massachusetts to begin Citizens Military Training. He is escorted by Mrs Coolidge's agent to ensure equal treatment with other cadets. He meets Brigadier General Barhtum and Colonel Learnard and reports to Company C First Battalion. He will train with James M Curley Jr and Henry Grant Learnard Jr. His officer is Second Lieutenant Sibley.
Rome announces a royal clemency amnesty freeing political offenders with exceptions for murder and excluding Matteotti case. Between 10 000 and 12 000 prisoners will be released including those jailed for minor crimes. The measure marks national pacification during King Victor Emmanuel III's 25 year reign.
Tony Sciarrino nine years old drowned after a pool stunt to prove leadership among companions at a private Melrose Avenue residence. The MacMillan Arctic expedition arrived off Etah Greenland at nine tonight after fighting ice in Melville Bay. Navy and Geographical Society reports say the Bowdoin and Peary are lashed together with engines off and aim to reach Etah as planned, with planes ashore and prepared for assembly.
A near illegible notice reports anonymous letters about an unidentified assault victim with no usable clues. It states no crew or identity can be determined, and the body will be sent for burial.
Miss Cora Stallman a Cincinnati native and longtime Cincinnati teacher was found dead seated in a cistern on the Seaman farm near Mattoon Illinois. Anonymous threatening letters and a placard reading We have got your sister scared green were found at the scene. Coroner to hold an inquest Monday and the body will be sent to Cincinnati for the home of another sister.
Miss Stallman who taught in Kirby Road public school until three years ago is reported dead after living with relatives in Cincinnati. Neighbors and family members recall her health decline and movements from Hol land avenue to Mattoon and back to Cincinnati. No details of cause or foul play are given as her brother Max Stallman travels from New York to confirm funeral plans.
