Payne receives an ovation as author of the tariff bill while supporters cheer the long struggle for passage. The House votes after protracted negotiations with the Senate, endorsing the conference committee's tariff report amid a festive floor atmosphere.
The House adopted the conference tariff report 195 to 183 after an eleven hour session in heat. Republicans backed the measure with Payne cheered as an author and Longworth argued for a corporation tax to fund inland waterways and broaden wealth taxation.
Former state oil inspector and Democratic committee chairman William L. Finley is accused of causing $8,028.87 in improper oil inspection fees. The report cites double inspections and fees paid for oil not actually inspected, with Kilgore and several deputies implicated in improper payments and re inspections.
Lawrence M. Larsh retires as clerk of Butler County courts after four years of service. He is the last Republican official to leave the Butler County courthouse. Charles Brunson, a Democrat, will succeed him on Monday and has reappointed John F. Heath as deputy clerk.
Paris dispatch reports Cornelius F. Cuyler died when the car brake failed on a hill near Biarritz. Unknown if others injured. Mrs. Cuyler stays at Hotel Biarritz. Cuyler to be transported to Paris. he was a banker with Cuyler Morgan & Co. and held vice presidential posts at United Guarantee Merchants and of Mobile and Ohio Railroad.
HAVANA July 31 Postmaster General Nodarse tonight entered the home of Senor Terriente editor of an illustrated weekly Poliing Comica and fired several shots seriously wounding Terriente Nodarse escaped and has not been arrested The cause of the attack is said to be tumors concerning the relations of certain high government official with Nodarse s wife The publication of a scandalous cartoon today is believed to have induced Nodarse to attack Terriente
Harry C. Grinstead cousin of Louisville mayor James F. Grimstead was named by Governor Willson as colonel of the First Kentucky Infantry K N G. He succeeds Col W B Haldeman who resigned after the dismissal of two officers and friction with Adjutant General P P Johnston. Over thirty officers and men resigned with Haldeman.
Three boys aged 18 to 20 were jailed in London Kentucky on charges of attacking a 14 year old girl, said to be the daughter of John Bryant of Corbin. Arrested are Chess Elliott Fred Williams and Wilfred Lawson. Warrants exist for two more youths.
The Tri-State Milk Farmers' Association met at the Dennison hotel and rejected a reply from the Hamilton County Milk Dealers' Association. They assert a full milk tie up will begin in Cincinnati, with four days’ stored milk and watered supply to follow, and claim dealers offer 18 cents per gallon to nonmembers. They cite rising butter prices and new buyers in Columbus and Indianapolis as evidence of market shifts.
Spokane Washington July 31 ten people killed and about sixty injured in a head on crash between two Spokane Inland railway electric trains at Coldwell between Cover D Alene Idaho and Spokane. Westbound train struck eastbound train at a station.
A thousand word length text describes a mob of about 100 Tennessee mountaineers armed with Winchesters attempting to lynch James White in Middlesboro Kentucky after an assault on Massie Woodward a nine year old. The mob rode trains to Pineville then returned to Middlesboro failing to find the prisoner in an empty jail. Sheriff R W Johnson had moved the man to Barboursville Kentucky for safekeeping and later the jailer moved Henry Cornett who shot and killed James Sawders at Clear Creek to avoid a second lynching. The mayor anticipated the mob and ordered the jailer to relocate Cornett.
Osaka districts burned as a vast fire reduced a four mile by four mile area to ashes. By six this morning 13,000 structures were destroyed and the blaze came under control after devastating large sections of the city. Fire crews battled the flames through the night amid widespread damage.
An explosion from Kuhlo Manufacturing founder Arnold Kuhlo’s gasoline filling machine caused a four story blaze on West Third Street. Five people died two children and three adults, with multiple injuries and several more missing. Firefighters fought flames as drought worsened conditions and the fire spread toward police offices and nearby buildings.
Fire swept through Hotel Tybee on Tybee Island early morning destroying the hotel bathhouses pavilions and depot area. Rough estimates place the damage near 100000 with no known fatalities though guests fled in nightwear and many returned to save belongings amid falling walls.
