In White Plains on July 30 District Attorney Jerome questioned Harry K. Thaw about his sanity and ego in Matteawan case. Adjournment to Monday followed terse exchanges and speculation about a possible divorce suit by Evelyn Thaw.
In a solemn ceremony at the Sorrove cemetery the body of Leopold Markbreit former Cincinnati mayor editor and chief executive was laid to rest amid hundreds of mourners. The funeral at Memshat hall featured floral tributes police guards and remarks by clergy and city officials. Members of the public from war veterans to editors paid their final respects to a man described as a courteous gentleman and honest statesman.
Special Dispatch to Commercial. Hamilton Ohio July Richter, the Hamilton lawyer, endorsed for reelection as census supervisor for the Third district and announced William P. Bode, assistant clerk of courts at Dayton, will be made assistant supervisor for Montgomery county. Bode will be paid six dollars per day. The census begins June 1, 1910. Richter was supervisor of the last census.
Representative Cox today opened a probe into Dayton Soldiers' Home administration by introducing a privileged resolution calling the Interior Department's attention to the board of managers. The move aims to uncover facts about the home's governance and inmate care.
John H. Orebaugh a Cincinnati lawyer was freed by Judge Manton after arguing he knew nothing of Parker’s alleged fraud against the National Bank of Commerce of Toledo. Parker was sentenced to eighteen months. Orebaugh left for Cincinnati with Parker’s case key witness his daughter’s testimony last week.
Paris officials report a French court ordered the dissolution of the Trades union formed by postal, telegraph, and telephone employees during last May’s Paris strike. The court acted under the law of 1384 citing the union’s alleged unlawful leadership and activities.
A series of powerful earthquakes struck central and southern Mexico early today, killing at least fourteen in Mexico City and surrounding areas. Acapulco and Chilpancingo were partly destroyed while communication with Guerrero remained cut. Buildings swayed, walls cracked, and fires or collapsed adobe structures were reported as panicked residents filled plazas. The shocks, felt from 4:10 to 6:00 a.m., caused widespread fear among locals and the American colony. no American fatalities were reported.
Orville Wright and Lt. Foulois soar in a ten mile cross country flight at Fort Myer in the famous aeroplane built with Wilbur Wright. The flight begins amid wind and rain, with preparations by the Wrights and Katherine Wright crowding near the machine.
Akron July 30 Special Dispatch reports amateur boxer Jackson, a colored man, was charged in default of 2500 dollars for writing two blackmail letters to Frankie Mason, vice president of the B. de Goodrich company, threatening Mason’s family if 2000 dollars were not deposited by a set time. He confessed to police but claimed he was under pressure and did not write the letters.
Salinas California July reports Charles Zimmerman and his wife were pinned beneath a overturned automobile that slid into a stream near Dr Rudolph Beck. Miss Alice Adams was not seriously injured.
James L. Houghtering of Chicago, en route to the world conference of the Young Men's Christian Associations at Rhentsch, fought off five robbers on the Italian frontier. He knocked one unconscious and arrested two others, sending a suspect to the hospital for an indefinite period. Houghteling, a former Yale baseball player, remains unharmed.
In Opelousas Louisiana July 30 two deputy sheriffs were taking Onezim Thomas and mil Antoine, both Black men, to jail when they were taken from them and shot near Grand Prairie. A white man named Fontenot was wounded. The incident follows a murder in the area and underscores a violent backlash.
