News from Mexico City reports a bank note surge as depositors bring pesos to the National Bank of Mexico and Bank of London and Mexico. Unrest includes 4000 Pancho Villa rebels attacking Chihuahua while General Velasco advances toward Torreon, with Huerta’s cabinet at risk.
A force of over 1,000 rebels attacked Tuxpan this morning and were repulsed after three hours of fighting. United States Consul Payne telegraphed that all Americans were safe. The battleship New Hampshire and the gunboat Wheeling were sent from Vera Cruz to protect foreign interests and fired salutes on entering the harbor with no response.
Senor Covarrubias advocates Huerta bow to President Wilson and appoint a foreign minister who could act as President pending elections. He argues this move would restore constitutional order, hasten a new president and chamber, and ease tensions over U S aggression in Mexican sovereignty.
Candidates filed campaign expense statements with the Board of Elections. Dudley S. Sutphin led with about 2507 spent, much going to party funds and advertising. The Wheeling and Lake Erie Railroad from the city to Cleveland remains tied up with no trains expected for hours, while the B and B road from Bridgeport and Cleveland stays snowbound despite efforts to clear tracks.
