McKenna to Penn State as top NHL draft prospect leaves WHL
Gavin McKenna announced on ESPN's SportsCenter that the presumptive No. 1 overall pick is leaving the Medicine Hat Tigers in the WHL to join Penn State University. The 17-year-old Whitehorse native had 41 goals and 88 assists in 56 WHL games last season and helped Medicine Hat win the WHL title and reach the Memorial Cup final. He joins a growing wave of CHL prospects moving to NCAA play under new rules allowing athletes to profit from name image and likeness. The Big Ten school went 22-14-4 last season and lost to Boston University in the Frozen Four semifinal.
