Miles Street site recommended again for homeless shelter village

City administration again backs the Miles Street lot for an 80 unit temporary shelter village as part of Thunder Bay’s 2023 action plan. The project, costed at 4 to 4.5 million with 2.8 million funded, aims to meet March 2026 completion with 40 units ready by December 15. Council votes Monday, with potential ratification July 21 or a renewed review.

June Port Thunder Bay cargo tops June record

Port chief executive Chris Heikkinen reports June cargo reached 1.193 million tonnes, the highest June tally in decades, with coal grain potash dry bulk and Keefer terminals contributing. Year to date totals exceed 2024 by about 155 thousand tonnes as steel rail and phosphate shipments stay strong and cargo like aggregate arrives for local use.

Canada’s $10-a-day child care target may miss 2026 deadline

A Canadian Press analysis says Ottawa will likely miss its 2026 goal for $10-a-day child care as only six provinces and territories meet or exceed the target. The report notes Ontario, Alberta and Nunavut show significant reductions but many regions still have higher fees.
