Hanged Men Photo Tied to Helena History Display
David Hilger of Lewistown donated a 1870 Helena hanging photograph to the state historical library showing Joseph Wilson and Arthur L. Compton's execution for murder. The image, taken during a legal hanging at Dry Gulch on what is now Davis Street, supposedly came after a photographer woman promised Hilger a copy. An oil painting of Hangman's Tree is also preserved, donated August 17, 1888, by W. E. Frederick. In Hill County, County Agent Campbell and Arthur Jones demonstrated Blackleg remedy vaccinating 56 cattle from nine farms, with plans for three more demonstrations this season and about 800 doses distributed, funded by the state and U S Department of Agriculture.
