Coronado Expedition and the Quest for Cibola
The 1541 Coronado expedition, led by Francesco de Coronado, marched into the central west of present day United States seeking the mythical Seven Cities of Cibola. Spaniards believed immense riches awaited beyond northern Mexico but the voyage ended in failure and disgrace for its leader.
Coronado and the Quest for the Seven Cities of Cibola
The mythic wealth of Cibola lured Coronado and Black Stephen into a costly raid on New Spain. Niza the priest and Stephen’s followers spread tales of turquoise doors and riches, prompting Spanish deployment and a fierce siege at Granada. No gold was found. Coronado’s expedition ended in loss of prestige and governorship.
