Sun River Elk Herd Too Large for Winter Range
A federal state and local panel found the Sun River elk herd overuses winter range, despite abundant summer feed. With 20 years of herd growth, willows and browse are overgrazed, risking winter feed shortages and watershed erosion. Experts agree on carrying capacity limits and plan control measures with wildlife and land groups.
