Teton's 4 H delegates excelled at the State Club congress in Bozeman with several blue and red awards. Hugh Maxwell earned a white placing for a safe farm tractor operation demonstration. Florence Kjellgren and Barbara Harberg won white awards in foods judging and style revue. Raymond Rowley and Donald Liggett won red awards in swine and beef judging. Bonnie VanDeReit and Margaret Montague earned blue in clothing and foods demonstrations, with Montague named one of the outstanding awards and to represent Montana at the National Club congress in Chicago.

District 8 American Legion and Auxiliary set meeting in Choteau with posts from Great Falls Belt Fort Benton Geraldine Augusta Dutton Fairfield Power and Choteau. Friendship Night Observed by Chateau Rebekah Lodge
The Chateau Rebekah lodge hosts Friendship Night on Friday October 3 with local members and visitors from nearby lodges. Mrs. Ida Hines of Bozeman, assembly president, will make an official visit. A 6:30 PM chicken dinner precedes an 8 PM lodge meeting. Tickets are available through Mrs. Hal Ferris until October 1.

Living Quarters Sought for Burleson Family in Choteau
The Rev. T. M. Burleson Episcopal pastor and his family need light housekeeping accommodations for four in Choteau. They currently occupy a tourist court and must move soon. Until December the rectory may be repaired. if no housing is found the family may have to relocate for three months.

Three Nabbed Saturday Night For Infractions
Robert Kolste of Fairfield released on $1,000 bond after arrest for grand larceny alleged impersonation of an officer and rolling H. J. Hansen. Kolste, by Officers Gould and Eggar, faces trial. Mrs. William Kessel and H. J. Hansen fined $15 for drunkenness and disturbing the peace. The pair jailed at Chateau by Deputy Sheriff Kershel. Reports say a knife fight occurred between Mexicans in Fairfield Saturday night.

The Cha teau Lions Club viewed Forest Harvest a sound film on the white pine lumber industry in western Montana Idaho and Washington at its Tuesday meeting. Plans for the 1949 event at the Legion pavilion Friday and Saturday were discussed. Members welcomed new initiates and noted Lions activities including 4 H fairs help for the blind chautauquas fun feeds tennis courts and swimming pool.

Anton Bergen 71 of Dutton was buried in Dutton cemetery after dying at Chateau Sept 9. Funeral by Rev. A B Gravdal at Dutton Lutheran Church. Pallbearers Jens Holt Ben Havalson Shell Billings Dave Danielson W Gustafson Alfred Olson. Born Bergen Norway Feb 24 1876 he came to Ada Minnesota 1880 then Montana in 1929 homesteading north of Dutton near the Teton river now owned by Selmer Bakken. Survived by three brothers Sever Martin Arndt a sister Mrs Martin Estenson and several nieces and nephews.

Surfacing Starts Next Spring On West Side
Work began Aug 4 on the Choteau Dutton road outskirts near Choteau. Crews will oil 6.25 miles from Chick's Shell station toward Dutton, with actual oiling delayed until spring due to snow risk. Sub-grade finished, graveling about one third done, weather permitting all non oiling work to finish this fall.

A rare Montana fruit sight shows a single peach grown from a garden seedling that produced 74 large peaches this year. The fruit comes from trees planted years ago by Jourdonnais family member E L Jourdennais of Missoula and was gifted to Blooms Grocery in Choteau by Hampton Bloom.

Mayor John Hentges urges municipal action to oil several Choteau streets next spring if owner interest exists. The plan includes renaming and numbering avenues, with E C Powell to estimate costs. special improvement districts would tax homeowners. Anxious agrarian recalls brown bear encounter on farm
Oscar Berndt of Dutton recounts stalking a brown bear on his farm near Chateau. While feeding winter wheat, the bear followed him from a field edge. After retrieving a gun, Berndt shot the bear breaking its front leg and then a neck shot dropped the animal.

Days of 49 to Be Held at Chateau Legion Pavilion
Lions club sponsors the Days of 49 celebration at the American Legion pavilion in Chateau on Friday and Saturday nights September 26 and 27. Doors open 8 PM each night with 50 cent admission for adults and 20 cents for students. Prizes include two door chips worth 5 each and whisky whisker contest prizes the first night. Choteau Couple Donates Chapel Honoring Son at Helena Deaconess
Mr and Mrs J G Johnson of Choteau donate Van Orsdel hall and the Helen C Piper chapel at the Montana Deaconess school in Helena. The Piper chapel honors Staff Sergeant Maurice W Johnson, a war casualty, while Van Orsdel hall recalls the man who brought the Deaconess to Montana and opened the Helena school in 1909.

Superintendent Glenn O. Hansen reports a slight rise in total enrollment at Dutton with 117 pupils in the grades and high school compared with 113 last year. The high school shows 38 students, down from 41 in 1946, while inclement weather forced postponement of a Dutton Belt football game. Upcoming Dutton games include Simms, Augusta, Opa, Power, Cancade, and Lexi Coules with dates in October.
