Plans Set for Friendship Night by Rebekah Lodge

Plans for Friendship Night are complete to be observed by the Rebekah lodge Friday evening October 3. Ticket sales are described as at an all time high by general chairmen Mrs Prank Zgoda and Mrs Kaare Larsen. Special activities include a friendship drill community singing led by Mrs Walter Dauwalder and a ceremonial. Mrs C Gibson Monkman will act as toast mistress.

Fire Prevention Week Plans Outlined by Choteau Volunteer

Tonight at 8 o clock the Choteau Volunteer Fire Department will meet at city hall to outline local Fire Prevention Week plans for October 5 to 11. President Elmer Erickson urges all members present and notes posters literature and school talks. He cites 1947 U S fire losses forecast to top 700 million with farm losses over 200 million and 11 000 deaths.

The Chateau high school yearbook staff was appointed this week by the Pep club and faculty. Jeanne Wilson will edit, Jack Fahey is assistant editor, Betty Jo Tague lays out, John Rose is class editor, Carlton Dahlin sports editor, Harold Hinman photography editor, Howard Reiquam business manager, and Jan Carlson art editor. Evan Thompson Downs Bear With Four Shots

A brown bear wandering near Chateau’s Cowgill addition was shot four times by Evan Thompson after being spotted by Hans Anderson and reported by the Millers. The 85 pound starving bear was killed amid an uptick in local bear sightings due to early frost reducing food. Nearby incidents include a man who struck a bear on the Cheteau Augusta highway and a sheepherder's severe bear attack in Augusta.

District Legion Meeting Set in Chateau with Montana Leaders

Army and Air Force offer new training program for youths

Staff Sgt. Bill Ulch announces a training program for men ages 17 to 34 to prepare for careers in the U S Army or Air Force. Eligible applicants may choose a trade and attend a service school before enlistment, with high pay quarters and a strong retirement plan. MEA Elects Herwig Chairman for Year

Gordon C. Herwig was elected chairman of the Chateau local of the Montana Education Association at a meeting of the combined faculties of the grade and high school last night. Helen Hanson was elected secretary. The MEA asked Governor Sam C. Ford to include education problems for consideration at a possible special legislative session.

Pioneer recalls Choteau’s early days with Mrs Harris

Julia Harris of Browning, a former Choteau resident from 1883, visits this week. She recalls a five cabin settlement with two main businesses Mombereys and Armstrongs Livery, the first saloon opened by Schmidt, and a cowtown lacking rail, electricity, and water. She now stays with her granddaughter Edward and wife at the Cline home.

Mrs Leona Johnson district president of the auxiliary will be honored guest at the American Legion auxiliary monthly meeting Monday evening Oct 6 in the club room. Days of '49 Beard Contest At Cheeterzu

Orville O Keefe won the grizzliest beard title at the Cheeterzu Days of 49 celebration. Robert Weedward and Jim Jackson earned praise for their beards. Lions Club sponsors reported 2706 dollars gross over two nights for the civic pool fund, about 160 dollars less than last year. Chateau Trap Club Announces First Trophy Shoot Schedule

Liquid Air Demonstration At Chateau High School

W. O. Everyman from the National High School Assembly spoke at a Chateau Monday assembly and demonstrated liquid air freezing grapes and a mercury hammer as a cudgel. He outlined current and future uses including liquid air as a power source. This was the first of five programs for the year, with the Melody Boys to follow later this month and Superintendent Graham inviting the public to attend.
