Smut Tests Fair to Growers at Montana State College
W O Whitcomb of the Bozeman state seed inspection lab reports 80 percent of hard red winter wheat ears tested since August show smut, with discounting by mills on smut content. He describes a simple test: weigh, scour to remove smut, reweigh, subtract to find smut percentage and discount. Dry threshing reduces smut, and six year trend shows rising from 32 to 60 percent before settling at 57 in 1929.
