Montana Sets 16 Day Pheasant Season Open Oct 28

Montana fish and game commissioners announced a 16 day statewide pheasant season from Oct 28 to Nov 12 with a four cock bag and possession limit. Shooting hours run noon to 5 pm Sundays and 8 am to 5 pm weekdays. Hunters may use shotguns under 10 gauge fired from the shoulder. No open season on chukar partridges or quail. A three day Hungarian partridge season Oct 28-30 with a three bird limit is also set. A separate 60 day duck season is recommended to begin Oct 12 with a seven duck daily bag and season limit through Nov 30.

Moisture Delays Harvest in Choteau Region

Unwelcome rain moved into the Choteau region last night hindering harvest, with frost and possible snow forecast. If weather turns favorable next week, most of the region’s harvest could finish in 10 days to two weeks. about 35 percent of the crop is harvested so far.

Explosion Hits Shell Refinery in Wood River Ill

Horace Beal, manager of the Shell refinery at Wood River, Illinois, vacationing in Montana, learns of a major blast at his plant. At least 13 dead and 17 injured as a cracking unit fails during a routine cleaning, with sparks from non-sparking scrapers cited. Beal expected to return to Illinois to help determine the cause.

Heart Attack Takes Life Of Aanerud

Randolph Aanerud 368 of Dutton died Monday night at a Chateau hospital after a heart attack at home near Dutton. He had been ill about two years. Services held yesterday at Dutton Methodist Church. Burial in Herrman Minnesota. Aanerud born July 5 1915 at Elbow Lake Minnesota was a Teton county high school graduate. He lived in Minneapolis for years returning last February. He married Margaret Larsen in 1940 at Minneapolis. Army veteran of World War II and member of the VFW in Minneapolis. Survived by his widow two children Kathleen and Ronald, his father Adolph Aanerud of Jutton, and brother Frank Aanerud of Denver.

Fights in Korea Involves Marine Gunner Robert Gray

Robert Fred Gray son of Mrs Irene Chay of Gallatin Gateway formerly of Choteau serves as a machine gunner with the 1st Marine Division in eastern Korea. The division has fought heavy hand to hand combat for about a week and a half. A second brief item notes an Episcopal guild meeting at Mrs Margaret Davis home on Thursday September 27 at 2 p.m.

John Robinson Hurt in Wreck Leaves Woman Dead

A two car collision at Bowman's corner on the Rogers Pass highway left one woman dead and two men injured. Mrs. Leon Chagnon, 56, of Havre, died 15 minutes after the crash. John Robinson, 22, of Agawam, was seriously hurt. he and the victim's husband were taken to a Helena hospital.

The Great Falls Tribune reports Roger Hammond was injured in a jet fighter plane crash aboard the aircraft carrier U S S Essex. Hammond is the son of Mrs Hildegard Lindseth Hammond of Great Falls.
